Here's Your Push-Button Easy Money Secret!

Only, it's not a secret. It's called having a list.

Please, for the love of all that's unholy, please put down that latest ebook you just bought promising you easy riches for doing no work. I'm begging you. PUT. IT. DOWN. Back slowly away. No, scratch that. RUN from it!

Then, slap yourself in the head for being so naive.

Now, repeat after me as many times as it takes until you actually believe it with every fiber of your being...

THE "SECRET" TO MAKING MONEY ONLINE IS HAVING A LIST!
THE "SECRET" TO MAKING MONEY ONLINE IS HAVING A LIST!
THE "SECRET" TO MAKING MONEY ONLINE IS HAVING A LIST!
THE "SECRET" TO MAKING MONEY ONLINE IS HAVING A LIST!

Yes, it takes work to build the list. Yes, I said "work." It also takes time. Yes, I said it isn't "instant riches."

Grow up. Stop living on Fantasy Island (De plane! De plane!). Embrace reality.

Think you're too new to start a list? You think wrong, tenderfoot!

You don't have to be experienced to build a list and make money from it. That's a myth. Does it help to have experience? Of course! Is it a requirement? Hell no!

Waiting is just stupid. There, I said it. I should know. I was a moron about this for years. Freaking YEARS!

Here's another myth I can explode for you...

You do NOT need a huge list to make good money. I made over $100 today from just one of my lists. It's small (under 1,000 subscribers).

And while I'm on a myth-busting roll...

You do NOT need your own product to make money from your list. That $100+ I banked today? 100% affiliate commissions from selling someone else's product.

Here's what you need:

1. Something of value to give away to build your list.
2. Aweber or something like it to manage your list.
3. A basic squeeze page to collect subscribers.
4. A "thank you" page for new subscribers to download your giveaway.
5. Roll up your sleeves and drive traffic to your squeeze page.

Get a good PLR report for #1 if you can't write or are worried that you have nothing good to say. Hire someone at Odesk or here in the Warriors For Hire forum to make you a cool piece of simple software to give away. NO EXCUSES! It's not that hard to do if you get off your ass and decide to do it.

There are Aweber tutorials aplenty. Go to YouTube and search for something like "how to set up Aweber." You'll have no trouble finding all you need in video tutorial format. Stop whining and DO IT!

Don't know how to make a simple squeeze page? I'll give you one: http://www.adclicktips.com/squeeze.html

Here's the HTML code to make that page:

HTML Code:

Your "thank you" page just needs to say Thank You! and have a link to download your giveaway. Easiest part of this.

Drive traffic from putting a link to your squeeze page in your signature here and at other forums. PARTICIPATE at those forums. Don't be a wallflower.

You can and should also use article marketing, video marketing, and other ways to drive traffic. Build your list. It's work! Treat it like work. Stop sniffling. Grow up!

Now, here's the part that a lot of people get wrong wrong wrong...

Treat your list members like real people. Don't preach to them. Don't scream BUY BUY BUY all the damn time. That's lame. Be YOURSELF with them. Write emails like you're sending it to your friend. Be REAL. Your list members will enjoy that. It's refreshing. It genuine. There's enough fake out there already. Don't add to the problem.

Now, just find some products you like yourself. Affiliate with them. Recommend them to your list members. Don't scream BUY BUY BUY. Tell them you got this product, you used it, it worked, etc. Be REAL.

Guess what will happen if you do all of that? You'll make money. You'll make money every time you recommend something. And you'll make more money as your list grows.

Next time you see a WSO headline promising easy money, instant riches, millionaire lifestyle without doing any work - ignore it. If you don't, you'll be here a year from now bitching and whining about not making money and about how all Internet Marketers are liars and scammers.

Wouldn't you rather be here in a year slapping high-fives all around and talking about all the money you're making and how you wish you'd started your list a long time ago?

Put the shiny new ebook down. Go build a list. Get to work. Don't make me send the monkeys to your house. That would be bad. Very bad.

John

    John,

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.

    1. How do you set-up your autoresponder sequence?
    Example-
Do you send an e-mail follow-up every day for 7 days?
Do you send just a couple of e-mails per week?

    2. When do you make most your sales from people who just signed up?
So if they signed up to get your course/ebook are they more likely to buy in the
first 4 e-mails you send them or would you say that you need the 7-contacts/emails before they buy from you?

The reason I ask is because I just started building a list but I only convert 2.5% of everyone on my list but I only have 4 autoresponders so far.

    THanks

I don't try to sell anything to new list members. My goal is building trust with them in the early days. That's not to say my way is the only way, but it's the way I prefer. I want them trusting what I tell them before I slap them with a sales pitch.

I send emails about every 3 days early on. Just a personal preference, again, not necessarily the best or only way. Test it... see if your unusubscribe rate goes up if you send more often. Find the sweet spot.

I'm not looking for the quick sale. I want someone who'll buy multiple times and stay on my list. Just like the local pizza joint down the street thrives on repeat customers, that's how I view my list.

2.5% is not actually that bad. You want more, of course, but hey, that's 2-3 sales for every 100 people on your list. Sell something good that costs $97 and you're making $200-$300 every time.

But you should focus on conversion rate. It's more important than anything else from the marketing end of this. It tells you if your list trusts you or ignores you. People vote with their wallets. Every other form of evaluation is less important.

Strive to get higher conversions, fewer unsubscribes, and keep adding to your list. Trust is the key to higher conversions. Never send them something you're not sure of, or just to make a buck. You can ruin all your hard work with just one bad email recommendation!

I agree with you Paul. IMing is something cannot be learned overnight. It takes time and like what parents do to their kids, they always remind and remind, teach and teach and teach, same thing over and over again. "Grown ups" in this field might not need but most will including me. Btw, thanks John for the page.

    Thanks Zeus,

I followed your advice from a previous thread.

Been at it a little over a week and I got 18 subscribers. Not much I know but I'm going to keep plugging away.

My list would be much bigger but my opt in rate is only at 10%...

    Thanks

      18 subscribers/week = 936 subscribers/year.

You'll get better at adding subscribers faster, but if you focus on building trust and genuinely helping your subscribers, you can make pretty good money from a list that small.

Conversions are key, though. Test different headlines, different bullet points, where you place the opt-in box, etc. Get your squeeze page to convert at a higher %. You should be able to get to 20% pretty fast. That will double your subscribers right there (since you're at 10% now). Work on that and your list will grow twice as fast (at least).

I forgot to mention that I got 18 subscribers in the past two days.

I spent the first few days crafting my email series, squeeze page and writing articles.

The site I am working with gets about 120 uv per day. So if I can get a 20% opt in that would be sweet.

Good thing about a steady traffic stream I can test easier. I just changed the layout going to let that run for 24 hours to see if that changes anything...

        Thanks!

Exactly right. You get a responsive list by convincing your list members that you have their interests at heart (not just your bank account). I mean, look, we're all marketers here. Everyone understands that they're going to be pitched when they join your list. They can easily unsubscribe. So you can't be silly about this and never send an offer that will make you money. That's charity, not marketing.

But, too many (imo) of us go the other way. They treat everyone on their lists like they're just dollar bills, not human beings. Have you ever gone into a restaurant and gotten horrible service? Of course, we all have. If the food's good, you might still go back one more time. But, if you get poor service again, chances are you write that restaurant off your list of places to spend your money.

That's EXACTLY the way to view your list, imo.

You have to work to develop a responsive list. You have to treat them well, give good service consistently, and all the rest. That's because this is just like any other "real" business. It comes down to two things: good products and good service.

Well, I have to say, I never really believed in the power of having my own list, until you and others pushed me into building one, at least from my previous clients/buyers. And I have to say, my believes were wrong and you were right.

When I send a mail selling something to my list, my own products that is, I can be sure to have a nice conversion rate. Let's hope it stays that way.

I'm glad you opened my eyes before I spend years neglecting that part of my business, I'd still be playing in the kiddie pool. Not that I'm swimming with the big boys yet, but at least I'm getting closer

Haha, you definitely have me sold on the idea of building a list. To be completely honest, I find the prospect a little bit scary, which is one of the reasons I've been putting it off. That might sound a little weird, but I recognize the responsibility required when building and interacting with a list, along with being an IM newbie, and I really don't want to screw it up or do something wrong. Seems like an error in list building would be a lot bigger problem than an error in affiliate website building, which rarely is a big deal.

I don't currently subscribe to anyone else's list, so maybe I should do that to get a better idea of how people usually handle them.

Don't hold off on building a list because you're worried about making mistakes. If you make one, admit it to the list. You're human... they'll understand and it can even help you to become more like "one of them" in their eyes.

And yes, subscribe to some lists. Get a feel for what others are doing (right and wrong). It's a great way to pick up tips and ideas for your own emails to your list.

Zesus66 (John) made some excellent points with his original post and then followed up with more valid points through out the thread. And one he mentioned bears being mentioned again.

Your list will be only as good as you treat it. In other words if you send out junk offers, it won't take but 1 or 2 and you will have destroyed the trust you have built with your list. Not only will you see your conversions drop dramatically but you will see your "UnSubscribes" sky rocket.

Remember that your folks on your list can and will be lifetime customers as long as they trust you. The actual money over that period of time can run into the hundreds and thousands of dollars.

    Awesome post as usual John.

    Listen to him my friends.

I fought it for years personally. Seemed weird or something (or maybe that was just me).

You DO NOT have to be a guru to have a trusted relationship with a list - offer them value, provide good solid info and when the time comes, offer them a solid product - they'll buy from you because they trust you.

    All success,

I couldn't agree with that more. On a related note, I think one problem that newer marketers have is they look at what some high-profile email marketers do (churn and burn) and they think "well, if successful marketer "A" does it that way, then obviously I should copy him/her". Yes, 'churning and burning' can be very profitable but that's a different business model and I don't think most newer marketers should try it. Building trust with your subscribers is the way to go, IMO.

Good motivation for building a list there Zeus,

I'm still in the process of getting some beginning traffic then I am to get straight into building a list. I'm sure I'll make a meal of it somehow but I know I'll learn from it.

I'll probably come back here to pepper you with newby questions in a few days time..

Or maybe my list will be such a success I can come back here and reaffirm everything everyone's already said myself. That would be cool.

A question for now, what freebie do you recommend giving away? eg. a top 10 ways list? A good article? An ebook? As a beginner I am not terribly confident in writing anything too long so my best guess would be a high quality top 10 ways article.

PS, I'm not on your list???
Is that my fault or is it yours? <-Careful this may be a trick question...
Thanks, Michael. You're not on my list because the flying monkeys are very particular about who they let in. You probably didn't make the cut.

        John,

Really enjoyed your talk on this(and everything else you covered) on Talk Marketing Now last night Since I sold my main 'authority site' last summer, my income has mostly come from micro niche CPA sites and services. I have recently decided to get into a pretty big niche(bought the domain name, done the keyword research and am almost ready to go) and I aim to create a site full of quality content, and building a list is going to be a big part of it. I had built up a decent one last year with the site I eventually sold.

Your point about customers leaving forever and having to continually replace them really hit home last night, so thank you I have actually kept my Aweber subscription even though I haven't been using it for months, but I will be doing so very soon.

I enjoy TMN, Liam, and I'm glad you got something out of my show last night. Thanks for the feedback!

All I can tell you is that the sooner you put even a handful of people on your list, the sooner you can start developing some trust and authority status in their eyes. That leads to more sales more often. The best traffic in the world to whatever you're offering comes from the people on your list.

Leslie, you made the cut because you rock. Simple as that.

            Hey John,

The perfect advice. This post reminds me of when I was a young salesman about 26 years old. I would walk into a prospects office and grab him (no disrespect ladies) in the collar and slap him around and then knock him on the floor, and let him lay there for a few minutes.

After a few minutes pick him up and dust him off, and tell him now lets do some business. Man, I think you need a sludge hammer and write "Knowledge" on it and hit them in the head with it.

BUILD YOUR LIST NOW!!! YOU CAN'T MAKE ANY MONEY WITHOUT A LIST

I'm on your list, so that means the flying monkeys didn't mind letting me in. The problem is: should I take that as a compliment or not? :p

        Oh really?

Then you leave me no other choice than to report you and your monkeys
        to the Monkey God.

yes, building a list means to do a pack of tasks till 100%... squeeze page + traffic + consistent and converting autoresponder (mixed content and offer) = MONEY...

this post is cool, and after you now have your squeeze page up and running, you can now drive mass targeted traffic there..

    happy money making guys

Well That is the secret my friend and same here it took me at least a year to start seeing some money coming in!

I have a list of almost 7k now but it too much work..it was harder than I thought it would be.

But let me tell you-- "Targeted Traffic" to a --->squeeze page can be somewhat Tricky for someone starting out and especially converting that traffic to $$..

Getting that laser targeted traffic and converting into subscribers will be the ultimate challenge to face and need to be worked on--don't fear but master it!!

    Just my 2 cents..

Great advice! Yep you can very easily use Google Website Optimizer to increase the conversions on your website. It's free and easy to set up too.

Just create 2 or more versions of your landing pages with slight differences between them. E.g. different headline, different bullet points, pot-in box in different position. Make sure there is only ONE difference between each page, otherwise you won't know which thing you're testing caused a change in conversions.

Then google website optimizer will give you some bits of code that you copy and paste onto your web pages. Easy!

Let the experiment run, keep driving traffic to your site. After you have had at least 200 visits to each page, then you can see the results of your experiment. Pick the one with the highest conversions, toss out the others, and repeat the process! Put your highest converting page up and create another 2+ variations and run the experiment again.

Keep doing this and your conversions will just keep getting better and better.

Don't I need to pay at least 10 dollars a month for a PO box so I can put an address on the emails that I send to my list?
