Articles for clicks or backlinks?

Hi all

There are a good few die hard article marketers here, but regardless of what level you are at, I think it's safe to say that 99% of the people here using article marketing as part of their strategies.

There is always talk of "doing it properly", with people offering good, bad and conflicting advice.

For me, article marketing has worked best to serve me with backlinks which influence my search rankings. I target the UK market and as such, nearly all my clicks come from the US, Asia or Australia. It is safe to say that FOR ME, article marketing is worth so much more in terms of SEO value than traffic delivery.

I know both are benefits, but if you were to select which benefited you the most, would you say articles are best for SEO or for traffic?

All of my articles are written specific to niches for targeted traffic. My business model does not depend on SEO, although it is a side effect of syndication.

      Exactly so.

I'm getting targeted traffic and far better SEO-benefits than one can get from article directories, as a side-benefit, by writing for syndication. (I suspect that several of the more successful "article marketing Warriors" who can't meaningfully choose between the two you've offered would select "syndication" if it were available as a third option in your poll ).

Yes Alexa, but if you think about it, syndication simply delivers more of both of the poll choices -- more traffic and more seo value.

I write for traffic, then I syndicate. And for my efforts, I gain targeted traffic and seo value, but because I syndicated, I get more of both.

I'm not the best writer...so I personally have not written many articles and submitted them.

Are they any guides or threads you can't point us towards with regards to syndication? I handwrite (or outsource) lots of unique content for article directories and websites, so I feel like I'm missing a trick with the whole syndication thing!

I've been writing/submitting articles mainly to get traffic to my small blogs. I try to make them as targeted as possible and submit them to the most popular directories. I suppose the better option is for SEO purposes, but my goal isn't long term for the sites I'm doing.

I'm not trying to be "awkward" but I'd find them by putting the word "syndication" into the search function: it will bring up a huge list of relevant threads.

Thats exactly how I found this thread

I was just wondering whether there was a definitive thread that may be hidden in the dark depths of the forum.

Syndication often "happens" as a by-product of submitting quality articles to the major directories. Some writers, as myself, do what for simplicity may be termed "planned syndication", where you target and submit your articles for specific vertical nich markets such as ezine publishers, blogs, websites etc.

A resource I have found invaluable is the Directory of Ezines (directoryofezines.com) which lists ezine publishers by market niche including publisher contact info, article submission guidelines, and also of course advertising rates if you choose to go that route.

Thanks Myob, I'll check out directoryofezines now. I've had good success getting my health related articles republished, although many don't feature my resource box

Yes, I agree ... syndication is, in a sense, a way of saying "both" ("but much better than you can get, for either, just through articles directories").

Don't forget to target syndication to blogs in your niche. These can give you traffic, SEO, and relationships.

How to find them? Let's use the infamous IM example. Guest blogging for the dog training niche.

Put this in Google: "guest post" dog training

It seems like people are missing out on what article directories can really do, and how they can make you TONS of cash!

Write good content, compelling content, and people will be interested.

This interest can extend itself into buying your affiliate product, visiting your review website (and then buying the product), etc.

From personal experience, as I have products that are affiliatable, I see quite a few affiliates who make $50 to upwards of $200 a day, every single day, because they have article sites with articles that were fantastically written and compel the reader to want to purchase the product.

So yes, article directories get you SEO, but if really put effort into the article, and write it fluently and in a compelling way, you can definitely get a user to convert to a paying customer right on the spot.

thanks for all the replies, the responses from certain people were just what I expected (by no means a bad thing) - alexa, bill...

seems a split pack. as we all know article marketing delivers benefits to both. I think preference seems to depend on a few factors, not least:

    - writing ability
    - niche and/or product
    - volume
    - knowledge of online marketing

Personally I just write as best as I can, syndicate my writing (hope it gets picked up) and ensure my links use anchor text.

clicks are more important to me, they are guaranteed traffic, the banklinks and PR are just a by product that helps in the overall scheme of things

I use articles for both. I use my resource boxes for click through traffic and for building keyword targeted backlinks. The great thing about article backlinks is getting links to your deep blog posts or category pages with a lot of stellar keyword related content.

You can post junk for backlinks, but not for clicks. I'm in the "writing for clicks" camp.

Me too. Most of the time. Sometimes I write just to build authority in my niche and not even so much for the direct traffic. Just to get my name out there as someone who knows a thing or two. I consider that an investment. But that's not really important for a lot of niches. I just think many article marketers overlook the direct traffic potential and go for the faster and uglier articles just to get the SEO effects. That's not always the smart play.

In SEO traffic and backlinks are very considerable and you can get both of that from article marketing.

They do give some traffic form the big directories, but I mostly use them for backlinks.
