What are your most effective list building methods?

Hi guys,

By now, just about every budding marketer knows the importance of building a list to generate long-term, sustainable profits.

But not all of these marketers know the various successful methods being used. There are a lot of different strategies available, but time and budget prevent some of us from trying out all of them.

So my question to you fellow warriors is this...

What are your most effective methods for gaining new subscribers to your list? Putting no thought to cost, what methods generate the best results for you?

Looking forward to your replies!

Thanks for your input,

Tyler

Here's the list so far...

The most effective way for me is also perhaps the most expensive. What I mostly do regularly is buy solo ads from targeted ezine publishers, and buy leads to toss into my autoresponder. New subscribers/buyers are added nearly instantly.

This is something that I really want to do some day. Not enough money right now.

Are solo ads more expensive than Adwords? Can you share your source for finding good ezines OUTSIDE the internet marketing niche?

      Thanks a lot

Adwords, then send my traffic to a squeeze page. That works well for me, although I haven't tried many different approaches.

Certainly, but I haven't done Adwords at all. The best resource I have found for solo ads is the Directory of Ezines (directoryofezines.com) It organizes ezine publishers by market niche, number of subscribers, ad rates, and also includes publisher contact info. It does cost $197 for unlimited use, but well worth it in the time savings over slogging through search engines. Typically solo ads can run $200 or much more.

There is a free source for testing solo ads which I also use frequently - solo-ads.com (not affiliated) You basically earn ad credits by reading other subscribers' ads and can send your own for free. They also have a paid option for sending to 3,000 for $25. If you can get a 1%-2% conversion rate, you're go to go for scaling up.

Thanks for your reply. How many subscribers can you reach with a $200 solo ad?

I don't know. It depends on the ezine, subscriber base, your niche, etc. But what you want is not quantity, but actually the quality of subscribers. That's why you need to match your offer as close as possible to the type of target market. The DOE can best answer that question for you. A list of say 10,000 targeted subscribers would be a much better value to you than 100,000 out of market.

People tend to opt-in to a list if they are offered something that has perceived value for them. Most effective is when it is free. So find something of value to your niche and make it available for download on your site.
Set up a simple squeeze page with a lead capture block connected to your auto-responder system that asks if the reader would like a "Special Report", for example, on "your niche". Ask only for their email address to start since this is a very low level of commitment for your site visitor. Encourage email submission by making the offer a "limited time only" one.
Then in your a/r series of emails slowly inform them of what you have to offer. but make sure you mix the sale pitch with useful free content. Once they buy, make sure you keep in contact with them.
Along the way, you can introduce another free something with a link to another landing page which again captures their address, but takes them to a new list. Then repeat the process of pitching and providing content. BUT, on this new list only pitch the new product, not the first one. They will continue to get that pitch on the first list's emails.
Do this as often as you have a new product.

If you do what the guru's say and not what they sell it's pretty obvious that endorcement mailings and JV partnerships are the most effective list building methods. Doesn't seem like it's a big secret, it's just work...and most people think thats a four letter word.

Writing articles and forwarding the resource box directly to a squeeze page works great for me. This gives me a ton of targeted visitors and subscribers. When I use this method my conversions are better as well.

Adswaps is also a method but is very reliant on how well you build your relationship with your subscribers plus its free.

Use Squidoo and put a strong graphic mid-way down your lens.

This has to be related to your lens, but what you do is put a pretty call to action graphic.

It works best if it goes to a video opt-in:

(simply make a clickable image to your video opt-in page).

Here is an example of one that I created.

I have 10 high performing Squidoo Lenses that I use this technique on.

(There is also a sneaky way to get big banners in the Squidoo sidebar).

Note: I don't send these to my free opt-in anymore, but when I was doing that I was getting 50 opt-ins per day. That is a list of over 15,000 in a year with free Squidoo traffic. These days I send them to my own Clickbank product.

    Hope that helps

        Rockhamm,

...and you don't need to master them all.

I got my first million to my blog with nothing but Ezinearticles, Squidoo...creating a nice little mini-net that all led to my site.

Pick 2-3 of these methods and master them.

        Cheers,

Thanks for your tip rusty, it's encouraging to see so much traffic coming from squidoo. 50 opt-ins a day sounds like a lot to a newb like me. How long do you spend creating a lense versus writing an article and which do you prefer?

            Honestly,

I recommend creating 1-2 REALLY good Squidoo lenses per month -vs- a bunch of crappy ones.

Then spend some time link building to those lenses. Treat them as if they are as important as your main website. At the end of the year you will have 15-20 outstanding lenses.

You will get the link process started...but since it is good, people will begin referring to it.

(Natural links the way Google intended).

To get 50 opt-ins per day, I have found that you need roughly 3,000-4,000 visitors per day (total) to your Squidoo lenses.

Once you have 15-20 really good Squidoo lenses with good keyword targetting...this won't be a problem.

            Here's where EZA fits in:

If I have a Squidoo lens that is getting crazy traffic on page one of Google, I will buy an exact match keyword. Create a similar blog to my Squidoo lens...and then write 10-15 EZA linking to it.

Note: I don't do all of my Squidoo stuff and EZA's under my own name.

            Hope that helps,

            -Rusty

So these visitors are going to my blog.

The opt-in rate is low, but the idea is to create helpful content that people link to...which then creates really big visitor numbers.

If I push too hard for the opt-in, It will increase conversions...but hurt my traffic levels in the long run.

The blog is now on track to hit 5 million visitors this year.

Have a list of just under 50,000...but it grows by 25,000-30,000 each year.

A lot of hard work, but I am now in a great place.

            Cheers,

I guess a better question is "What type of subscriber do I want to get?"

Some of the best subscribers you can ever get will be found using forum marketing as these people will share similar interests to you. Provide you're in a niche that you are passionate about then you should be able to find the best places to advertise.

If you're in the golf market and you know that none of your golfing buddies have ever read an EZA on golf then articles are probably a waste of your time. Now they suddenly tell you about a great blog where they got a tip about putting, can you see why setting up a specialist blog about your passion would be a better way of listbuilding.

Wow, list building is something I'm working on right now so thanks for everyone's input on this.

Another strategy that I'm trying right now is JV Giveaways through newjbgiveaways.com. I've heard this can be a great way to get your list size up to a 400-500 level at which time you can more easily start doing ads swaps.

I have tested most of them for some of my clients. But the one that is most effective for me is PPC. Now before you go crazy and start talking about how PPC can eat away your money.

There is a technique that I have not shown you. But it’s not going to be made public here today.

So, do you want just to build a list or do you want a list of subscribers that buy from you and not a bunch of freebie seekers that will just sit in your email data base.

The system is about getting about 15 “ready to buy keywords” and build a high converting squeeze page and have a strong affiliate product on your thank you page.

Example: If you spend about 5.00 on pay per click marketing then the affiliate product commission should equal $5 on your thank you page

The concept is base on a “break even strategy”

You have to learn how to break even on the front-end before you move on. It won’t do you any good to dream about hitting a grand slam home run (bases loaded home run) unless you have hit one with the bases empty.

I can't speak for anyone else but if you set it up correctly, that is, target Yahoo and Bing for subscribers. 5 to 7 cent is a good guide.

Keep in mind, that it has to be set-up with (buyer ready keywords) and that is a process in itself. And one of the tricks is actually find out who your competition is and target their URL.

After you get good them move to Google. If money is not problem you can do both.

I don't hear a lot of people say this often but - the lead up!

Yeah, you could be landing a lot of subscribers right off the bat but if you consistently deliver great information on a regular basis without a list (for a while), you're going to build a very rabid community which will BEG you to create a list. Once it's up there, you'll have brand ambassadors to help promote your list to others
