I have a list of e-mail addresses, and I don't want to SPAM. How do I go ahead then?

Hello Warriors,

Well, I don't have really have a list at the moment, but there's something in the works and my current idea to max. it is by getting some e-mail addresses (not from a bulk list, but by sourcing them manually to ensure the relevance) and contacting them.

Now, once I have these e-mail addresses, I don't want to start spamming. However, e-mail is my preferred (or so I think) mode of getting in touch with some people, how do I go about it?

I tried doing some search on Google for this, didn't find anything useful. So, I'm back here... where such questions are dealt with in detail by many, everyday. So, I'm hoping for a good lot of inputs, and I thank you in advance for your time and views

Good question as you can contact affiliates and add them to a list and email them,

How many emails are you talking ?

You are going to want to sign up for an email marketing program such as Aweber or Constant Contact. Both offer trial periods. I think constant contact is 60 days free and AWeber is 30 days for 1 dollar, than 19.99 after that.

AWeber can make really cool opt in boxes for you and will automatically keep the email addresses for you. You can also set up auto messages so that you are not spamming your clients. Email Marketing programs offer an easy unsubscribe button which should make you not want to spam. Offer valuable information to your list and you aren't spamming.

Your offer shouldn't be spam because it should be relevant to your list. Just keep your messages spread out. For most niches 2 messages a week is more than enough.

Shouldnt the fact that 'they didn't opt in' on their own, make that they have been labeled as spam?

This exactly relates to my query. They didn't opt in. In fact, I never even showed them my website or squeeze page or anything.

It's like cold-calling, only via e-mail. However, that's frowned upon far more than cold-calling is. This is where I need some ideas if I can make use of the e-mail addresses to get in touch with my target customers (not affiliates) directly. If that doesn't work out, I'll have to think of an alternate route.

You won't be able to use Aweber or other e-mail marketing programs to make your initial contact as they only allow you to use it to send e-mail to people who have opted into a list or agreed in some way to receiving e-mails from you.

I'm in Australia and the laws here aren't quite as strict as the US (I don't think) but it does allow you to send unsolicited commercial e-mail if it is relevant to the recipient and they have conspicuously disclosed their e-mail address ie. the e-mail address is on their website or a yellow pages ad etc. But it has to be relevant to their business/their line of work, so for example if you sell tap washers you can't e-mail every business just because they have taps and might need washers, but you can e-mail plumbers because it is directly related to their line of work.

I know the law won't be the same in every country but just wanted to show an example that there are instances where unsolicited e-mails aren't regarded as SPAM.

I'm not going to send out bulk e-mails. They'll be very targetted, and will seek for permission from the recipient to ask me for more detail (of course, this initial e-mail would go with a teaser to draw interest). How about that? Does that also count as spam?

I highly recommend you start building your list with an autoresponder from your own website, contact this people trying to sell or share something will be spam, because they didnt give you permission to send anything, they dont know you! so please dont do anything! I think you are a newbie, this can destroy your business even before to start!

Unless you are experienced, it's really best to don't even do it. There are marketers, including myself who buy leads regularly but they are closely targeted to the offer. As a minimum to import leads, you will need besides the email address is the IP from where the lead originated (subscribed) and a current date stamp, usually within the last 60 days. With few exceptions, email providers require leads to optin to your list, which may effectively make the leads useless.

So, the concept of seeking permission isn't workable either?

You mean opt-in. You should expect up to 98% of the list will not respond, but on a large scale it could be workable.

You'll actually have a far higher conversion rate by either sending them a postcard or even calling those type of leads with an incentive to subscribe to your list.

Thanks for the tip I've marked in bold

However, I was talking about sending an e-mail (not opt-in) with a teaser and ask for permission to share more details if the person was interested. Would that also be counted as spam? or is that workable?

That may be considered spam, but I am not familiar with the laws in India. In the US just one complaint could get your ISP shut down and may also incur legal penalties. Don't play around with this if you have no idea what you're doing. Read up on the CAN SPAM act or your local laws, and get very familiar with it if you are so determined to go this route.

That would be considered spam, you wouldn't have that much risk if they had some previous business with you. For example you sold items on eBay and then you sent them an email asking them if they want to get updates on new items.

I did that and still got like 2% spam complaints. In your case I would imagine you would get more than 50%.

Lucky are cold-callers then... maybe I should take that up, as well.

I've tried to import lists into AWeber that I collected outside of their system and even though they were double opted in, they have a specialist who must manually approve such imports. In my case they said their wasn't a sufficient audit trail and dis-approved my requests.

Like others have said. Get a good auto-responder and start collecting leads through that. Sending emails to people who haven't specifically opted in is pretty dangerous and not worth the risk, in my opinion. --Mike
