Has anyone tried creating custom client area through wordpress? (not the default wordpress dashboard)

Requirement - Website is free to sign up, every user has his/her own client area with documents/proofs/invoices of their previous purchases - they can buy services listed there...

I kind of got the client area working by combining couple of plugins + custom coding. But I was wondering if there is a better way to do the whole thing...
I am also looking at integrating the registered client data into available invoicing plugins and crm plugins.. That way it will be easy for the site owner to monitor things....

Anyone already tried such a thing in Wordpress? Any thought?
