Hi everyone, I'm looking for your thoughts on this which I came across today when looking for new niches.

* the keyword receives only 170 exact searches per month
* the keyword domain is available
* the keyword search only yields 96,000 results

I'm quite sure I can get somewhere near the top of page 1 for this site without a great deal of effort besides the initial set up. The niche itself is not particularly exciting but I feel if people were to hit the site there is a good chance of a purchase - it's not really a browsing niche, it's in the health niche but at the frivolous, not really needed end. Having said that there are only 170 searches for this keyword, which is the stopper for me...

I'm wondering whether to part with my money and time to set up - based on those points above does it seem a worthwhile investment?

Thanks!

Matt

Matt, the number of results listed isn't relevant, here.

What's relevant is the SEO-quality of the top 5 (or so) of those results, because that's what determines whether you'll be able to rank a site there.

You have (about) 5 competitors. It doesn't matter in the slightest whether they're the top 5 out of 96,000 or the top 5 out of 96,000,000. You just need to assess the SEO of those top 5 sites - and ignore the number of other sites by which they're followed.

it's a very good point. i sell through amazon and find they always rank at least once on page 1 for my keyword terms. i have only once been able to topple them. other sites listed are deep links with <10 backlinks but have strong overall domains.

You'll never know unless you try. You say the niche isn't particularly exciting, but you "feel" people will purchase something at a site. Have you done research on this?

Are products in this niche selling on other sites?

This should determine whether or not you pursue it.

there's a market for this product it's just not a very big one. the only reason i say i "feel" it will sell is because it's quite a specific product that one would not browse for, like clothing or video games for example. it's also not a health product as in it fixes a problem. it's in between.

      thanks

First of all, Alexa nailed it: you have to know how strong your competition is, so if you haven't done it already, install the SEQuake toolbar which will tell everything you need to know about your competition. Then you have to decide if your keyword is a "buyer" keyword. Just because its a longtail keyword that doesn't make it necessarily a buying keyword.
