Can you make $5000/month through bum marketing

Hey fellas,

I have come across many article marketers who claim to make 5 digit figures and that too without a website via ezine articles!

Since, I am 'relatively' new, I dont understand how can they earn without spending a dime! The thing that further puzzled me was that you are not allowed to post affiliate links in your articles according to the guidelines laid down by the ezine publishers.

Has anyone made at least $5000 through article marketing and that too without investing anything? Please let me know, as it has baffled me for a while now!

I can't answer to the $5k, but I wonder if they mean they use free websites like blogger, hub pages and squidoo - I guess that could be considered no website and would require no monetary investment, only time.

  • you are allowed to buy a very cheap .info domain, and then let it act as a top level domain that forwards to the affiliate link. Maybe I've read the TOS wrong, I don't know someone chime in if I'm wrong but I'll paste it:

    9. You declare that you will not send in any articles with direct affiliate links in them. We reject articles with direct affiliate links. It is ok, however, forward/redirect to an affiliate link from the top-level of a domain name you own. For example, it is permissible to forward to an affiliate link from:

    http://your-company-name dot com

...but it would not be permissable to forward to an affiliate link from:

    http://your-company-name dot com/page.html
    http://your-company-name dot com/subdirectory/
    http://your-company-name dot com/subdirectory/page.html

I don't know if by forward they mean as in you mentioning it on that page and then someone clicks it. Or if it actually means that the domain forwards, in which case usually the user who clicks on that link never sees the affiliate link and just sees the forwarding domain name in their browser.

I guess ezine doesnt want to blatantly allow people to promote affiliate links and thus wants people to do it this way

  • Pasted straight from EZINE TOS

I think the difference is that if you forward/redirect when people click the link and go to that affiliate link the only domain they see is the one you used to forward at the top of their browser.

That depends on whether you redirect the url with or without masking, not on the target site.

  • I don't know from experience I wanted to forward one of my domains to another, and when I tried, it would forward but the original domain would stay stuck at the top of the browser.

Either way its more beneficial to people who don't have a dime and therefore can do article straight to affiliate offers

There is no one right way or "only way". My first successes came by direct linking and my first sales actually were from PPC traffic going directly to a redirected affiliate link for a product that converted well. It was an old skool technique of IM that was very profitable for many people for a long time.

I personally suck at listbuilding. I don't do much work in the IM or MMO niche and many of the niches that I work in simply wouldn't do well with a list. Yes, it could be done and I do have lists for most of my niches but if someone has a problem, I promote a product that fixes their problem then they don't need me anymore so there is no reselling... they're on my list for a very short period of time.

I have changed my marketing strategy and do send traffic back to my site instead of sending it directly to the product that I am promoting. It is new to me but my sites are getting more traffic and there is a slight increase in sales but nothing "night and day" about it in terms of sales but this change has only been over the past couple of months.

Just my two cents and what I have experienced over a couple of years.

Wow how many times I hear my clients say this, and it amazes me.

Dont worry, I too thought list building was crap..and not worth it. Even in my non IM niches.

Since then and I am being serious here....I have found list building to be one of the most easiest and profitable things you can do online....of course if you do it right you can really hit the jackpot.

That's a masked redirect. If you set it up through GoDaddy or whatever you have the option of masking it or not.

  • Its not the only way. You can make a ton of money from just direct sales. It just benefits you more to capture a lead.

For someone looking to create some capital first and first learn the techniques to converting traffic into sales is a great idea.. if not use a free blog and put your opt-in box in that, and I'm aware that there are a few ways to get free auto responder services.

Furthermore, it can be used to test the conversion rates or viability of a niche, and then you can build around that and change the links to a website and opt-in box after.

I don't think either mindset is bad and both can make you ton of money.

From the perspective of someone with little to no money to invest, it sounds like the ideal way. Once they build capital from that, all is not lost and nothing is stopping them from changing their ways or changing the links on their articles to then learn the whole lead acquisition process.

I know going the lead route is better in the long run, but sometimes starting off with just a basic process can be far more efficient for a newbie.

*EDIT* in response to reportking, but thanks for clearing that up bret

Don't get distracted by numbers . . . there's no way to prove one way or another somebody's claim of income these days. Just know that you CAN make money online with the BUM marketing technique.

How much you make depends on how much effort you put into it.
