Default What's in it for me? [a.k.a. Why You Can't Sell Online]

When I first started learning IM I made an info product - which did not sell a single copy, simply because the sales page sucked... big time.

It was all about me, telling people how I made from 0$ to making a few thousand dollars online... but it was all about me. Now when I look at it, I understand why no one ever purchased. I never mentioned why my product is more unique than any other product, I never talked about the prospect and I never mentioned "What's in it for... the potential customer".

At that same time I contacted a few big guys of the online world and I asked them if they wanted to do a JV of some sort for my product... they all asked "What's in it for me?", "Why should I promote YOUR product, what's so special about it?" - and I have failed to answer those questions... Wonder why I never got any of these guys to JV with me.

I guess this is the common error of many newbies and even some guys they've been working at it for a while - they thought of themselves too much.

The truth is, you could get Frank Kern (or any other great marketer) to e-mail his list about your product... I would even say it is easy to get him to do it... as long as you can show how much value is in it for him/her. You will have to find out and learn what is important to the potential JV and to his subscribers, so when you get in touch with you can clearly state: "Here is what's in it for you and here is what's in it for your subscribers..."

I am sure many people here, on WF already know this and will laugh at me for posting this - but I am sure it is something "REVEALING" for newbies.

So, the next time you try to get a JV, write a sales letter for your product or even write a pre-sell/review copy for an affiliate offer - don't even think about what's in it for you but rather WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM. The same applies when you approach an offline business - they really do not care how much money you made and how big of an expert you are - all they want to know if YOU can leverage their business, they want to know what's in it for them.

Sorry for the long rant.

Alex

Good advice. People do forget the obvious and it is always better to remind them again and again even if they know the truth.

Dear Mr. Cowles,
I know you are kidding but I would still like to give a reason for this post.

I started noticing more and more threads on different IM forums, including WF, where people say something like this: "I want to write an e-book because I want to make quick cash... How much should I charge?"...

Many newbies seems to be only thinking of what's in it for them and how much money they could possibly make. With this attitude, folks - you won't make much and I can guarantee it. I was like this too when I started, I wish I realized this before I spent countless hours on things I never benefited from, monetary or otherwise.

Just hoping it will open the eyes for some, and remind others

Alex

GREAT post Alex..

And it is SPOT on..

I'm no guru, but for sure when someone mails me with a list shot request or something..I will have to re-arrange a whole schedule of promo to fit it in, so it better be worthwhile, not so much for me.. but for my lists.. in any niche, the list has to get what they want in order for me to benefit too..

Keep rockin' star

Peace

J

Jay, I remember when we spoke about a JV a while ago - that was one of the "aha" moments for me... when I realized that you had promotions planned out for months ahead and if I wanted to get a spot in there I really needed a product that would benefit you and your list in a great way.

Thanks for that

Alex
