This could be "Deiss"-ey...

Just received an email from Ryan Deiss whom I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with. I've always found gems in his free and paid stuff... but was a little taken back by an email I received where he literally took down his blog (actually, he just put up a index.php or index.html page and left the blog up which puts up a ???...anyway) and is going to filter out his list by charging everyone $10/mo to stay on it.

What do you think about this move?

While buyers are better, prospects certainly assist in sales when they comment / tweet / fb share your content, product launch videos, etc. bringing in more free traffic / leads. Some just haven't seen the right offer from you, and would pay if you created something targeted to their needs as well.

Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but I was curious if any of you see this as a smart or "Deiss"-ey move?

I think Ryan has now committed himself to a job of having to post amazing content on a "set" basis (every month AMAZING STUFF or you basically lose your list.)

Thoughts? Either way, pretty bold for someone with a 200K list, wouldn't you say?

Cheers,

Scott

I bet I still get promotions from him even if I don't pay the $10.

Lol, yeah I'm with 'ya there.

I've grabbed more than one of Ryan's offers and have always been satisfied (the video sales letter formula was perfect and will pay dividends forever) - but other stuff will never interest me like his "becoming a social media manager" product... so $10/mo for a "untargetted internet marketing content" membership isn't going to appeal to someone like me, and if he in fact isn't going to mail me anymore the products he does come out with that I like won't pass my way.

Seems silly, but I'm sure this is more about generating a buyers list off of long term freebie seekers than sending his buyers away who are a notches above the "how to make money" content and only invest in tools/training that involve growing aspects of their business like getting more traffic, squeezing more money out of their buyers, etc.

I happily pay $10 a month to stop getting promotions from him :p

LOL... paying $10 to stop him sending you stuff is funny. He sends out a few things, but not as bad as some. I used to get 2-3 emails a day from some marketers... ridiculous.

Anyway, it does sound like an empty threat. Probably better to manually sort his list & purge the non-buyers.

Either he is getting desperate or this is a ploy to prepare people for some new launch of some kind. I can't imagine many people would pay to read his blog, but then again, there's a sucker born every minute.

He'll regret it. And I predict he'll revert back to list building. Maybe to save face, it won't be "Ryan Deiss" but this move is idiotic. And I have met Ryan several times and like him personally.

This whole "purge your list" thing has no economic basis whatsoever. The carrying costs on his 200k list are nothing compared to what its worth.

What you CAN deduce is, there's trouble in "guru list land". You don't fix what ain't broken.

And his buddy's analogy in the video is horribly and empirically wrong. Android. I've got 8 pages of good apps and never paid a nickel.

Anyway, it will be fun to watch.

I bet I'll get emails too LOL But he's killing it on his Facebook Fanpage. I think that's what he was referring to in that email. I briefly skimmed through it. He's going to be using his fanpage kind of like his blog if I'm not mistaken

A friend of mine did something similar when he got a new phone number. He sent a text to all his contacts saying that he wasnt going to add any names to his new phone, only those people who sent him back a reply.

    He didnt get many replies!

    List segmentation....

One that's his A-list, another one to shoot affiliate promotions too.

He could even sell solo-ads or the leads itself from that A-list for much higher prices. Or it could even be he's going to sell an entire business, and wants to increase the worth of the business quickly.

But remember, wouldn't it be the raving fans that are commenting, tweeting etc all the time now - the people that really mean it (not only click a little button) - be willing to pay the $10 per month?

Answer: not all, but he's thinking a fair share will.
My opinion: list segmentation is great! He'll probably keep the non-payers too. Don't want to throw away a list you build.

      Hi Scott,

What do you think about this move?
He's hoping to create buzz from people posting about it on forums including stuff like this -

      I've always found gems
Ryan has now committed himself to a job of having to post amazing content on a "set" basis (every month AMAZING STUFF or you basically lose your list.)

So, you people have never heard of a paid newsletter membership delivered via email? Where have you all been?

Having said that, he's full of crap. It IS about the money. Second, his reasoning makes no sense. He's doing this to protect his content? Umm, if you're worried about protecting your content, you don't release it to people for free or for $10.00 a month. If that's your concern, you don't release it at all.

At the end of the day, this just another income stream for him, and I suspect it will be a decent one in the short term. And it's not like he's abandoning his main list, so it's a win win on his part.

Seems strange, why not just offer a more "exclusive" list with better content and still keep his other subscribers considering there's a list of like over 100k and about 30k buyers or something (after seeing a recent video where he showed his lists)

It's really hard to have an "exclusive list" with better content.

The Internet Marketing Center tried to do it some 6 years ago,
but they ended up merging the 2 (free & paid) lists together as
one free newsletter list, because, according to the CEO then,
I can't remember whether it was Corey Rudl or Derek Gehl,
he said it ended up the content weren't that much of a different,
so they just decided to make it free for all readers.
