WOW, Amazon S3 now allows you to HOST your websites

WOW,

I just got this newsletter from Amazon AWS that they are now beginning to allow you to host your static websites.

Up until now, S3 would only be allowed you to host your images , video etc, so it was kind of HUGE storage space but you could never host your own website.

But this new feature will really be useful for people who want to host their webstie AND digital content at the same place.

Here is content copied from their newsletter

Dear Amazon S3 Customer,
We're excited to announce new features that make it easy to host static websites on Amazon S3. Customers already use Amazon S3 to host images, video, and other content for their websites, but until now they haven't been able to effectively host their entire website on Amazon S3. That's because even though customers can configure an Amazon S3 bucket as a website, users accessing the root of the website (e.g.http://www.mywebsite.com/) would see the list of objects in the Amazon S3 bucket instead of the website's home page. Also, if an error occurred, users would see an Amazon S3 error message instead of a website specific error message. In response to customer requests, we've added support for root and custom error documents to address these issues.
With these new features, Amazon S3 now provides a simple and inexpensive way to host your website in one place. To get started, open the Amazon S3 Management Console, and follow these simple steps:

1) Right-click on your Amazon S3 bucket and open the Properties pane
2) Configure your root and error documents in the Website tab
3) Click Save

You have always been able to host your webpages on Amazon S3, they have just made it a little easier now. But this is only for static pages which these days are very few and far between.

  no wordpress, no database, just static website
  
  And you can also not point your domain names to their servers, it will still be yourbucket.s3.amazon.com kind of address
  
  but it does give you a more secure way to host your digital content. You can define an Access Control List for your download page for example and only allow people who have password to open it.
  
  Hosting your download page at the same place as your digital content will make lot of things easier from security point of view

Not if you use a cname entry like I have been doing for a long time now.

Will you please explain how to do that, Will? I don't know how and would like to know.

I dont get it. What is the adventage of hosting a site in Amazon S3? I understsn hosting videos, but HTML files?

  If you were doing a product launch or getting a ton of visitors to your site at any one time, there is always the risk of crashing your server. The more files you host off your server the less likely it is this will happen.

I use S3 and Cloudfront and they're great. But if you're hosting your site there and you have major issues, who you gonna call? Hostgator, Bluehost, or... yep, Amazon and it ain't free. oops
