tinyurl and bit.ly question

5 replies
If I process my long affiliate link thru tinyurl and bit.ly, I'll still get affiliate credits, right?

In other words, the text is MY LINK and I use bit.ly or tinyurl for it, since it would still lead to the target page of the link then I still get credit, correct?

    I don't recommend you to use free online tools, actually I wrote a thread with a free cloaking software you can use instead:

    You can use those services to cloak your links, you do get the aff credit
    However my personal advise would be to create domain.com/redirect.html (where redirect.html has your aff link and a redirector) makes it look more professional as well as trustable

    I agree with BudgetSEO.

    And here's the script to make it happen:

    Code:
    <?php

       header( 'Location: http://www.yoursite.com/new_page.html' ) ;

    ?>
    Just grab this piece of code, paste it in notepad, change http://www.yoursite.com/new_page.html to your affiliate link, and save the file something like index.php or go.php (you must save it in PHP!).

    And you have your own professional looking redirect that you can host on your hosting account

    And about your question, yes you'll still get credit if you use these services to cloak your links.

    I have done this before and it worked fine. I actually have no problems with bit.ly. I like them a lot, but they may be considered "third-party tracking" and you need to be sure that it's allowed by your network/advertiser before using these.
    Also, it's good to let them know anyway so you are on the "up&up" because these tools are often used by black-hatters for cloaking their affiliate links - which is most often frowned upon.
    Better safe than sorry.

      That was what everyone said about "tinyurl" in 2009, before it suddenly disappeared overnight, at one point, and they lost all their links.

      The best sort of link cloaker is any one that you own and control yourself.

      To put it mildly, it's not sensible at all to rely on the continued availability, goodwill, reliability and changeable terms of service of any third-party cloaking/URL-shortening service.

      And if anyone tells you that they "have no problem with bit.ly", just invite them to read this recent post on Ben Metcalfe's blog: The .ly domain space to be considered unsafe | :Ben Metcalfe Blog.
