Can you include some gif basic animation pictuers in ebooks, so that when they are opened from somebodies computer it animates?

would the gifs need to be hosted on a server? or just can be installed in the ebook?

Depends. If your e-book is a PDF (and it should be - for maximum user experience) then no, you can't include animations.

Why would you want to do it anyway? Consider showing the same result with a few different (static) images side by side and you'll come off far more professional than you would if you'd use animations.

The last time I looked, the browser actually "animates" animated GIF's (it sequences through the images within the GIF file) and PDF documents don't have that capability.

Assuming you are using Adobe PDF Reader Pro, you can take the following steps to make this happen by importing your GIF into Flash:

    1) Download and install a free trial of Adobe Flash.
    2) Import your animated GIF into Flash and save the file as an SWF file.
    3) You can then insert this SWF file into your PDF using the Tools->Multimedia->Flash Tool menu item.
