Domain Worth? --- Should I Buy Them All?

The other night, while surfing around on GoDaddy I came across a .com domain that although it is out of my normal niche area is getting taffic so I bought it.

I own approx 50 domains but always before I've only bought domains that fit my marketing mix. This one clearly does not but since it is getting 5,400 global monthly searches with a 3,600 local monthly search factor with "strong and holding" local search trends I couldn't resist not buying it.
I should pobably also mention it's three-word, nine-digits make up a common expression that pertains to a huge generic consumer industry

Please forgive me if I come off as secretly evasive but this domain is currently wide open in that none of the other suffixes (.net, .org, .biz, .info, etc have been taken/sold.

Given the huge generic product category it pertains to I'm sure it would be a candidate for an adsence site but that too is out of my normal mode of operation therefore I'm considering the possibility of selling it.

Before attempting to sell or, for that fact even telling anyone what it is should I close ranks and purchase the other .org, .net, .info, .bix suffixes to protect my investment?

Perhaps I should have asked this question first --- ??? --- what is a domin like I've described worth? If a 5,400 per mo search domain with strong trends isn't worth very much perhaps I shouldn't bother. As you can see, I'm out of my element. Any insight would be appreciated.

I would ask the following questions:
1-How much competition is there currently for this keyword term?
2-What is the Cost Per Click(CPC) for this term?
3-Did you pick up this domain as a dropped domain or just hand register it?
4-Are the global monthly searches Broad, Phrase, or Exact?

Recent domain flips : $8->$1000 Social recruiting Software dot com $8->$2000 MobileSalesSoftware.com

Thank you for your response. The only question I can answer is number 3 --- it isn't a dropped doman. The stats I quoted in my original post were from Google's keyword tool. Your response to this post has opened my eyes as to how mucch I don't know about key words and the world of PPC --- CPC. I've always used off line analogue methods to drive traffic. I guess it's high time I purhased a pogram like Marketing Samurai and got up to speed. Thanks.

It seems to me if it were a really hot niche, all of the other extensions would be taken already. At least that's the case when I'm looking for domain names to purchase. I would create a site on it to add value to the domain and drive some traffic to it, whether that is your usual model or not, since you bought it. I would also tie up the .net, .org and .info., but only if I were going to do something with the .com.

Thank you for your response. I also am a little befuddled as to all the extensions being available. As you can see from my previous post --- I obviously need to skill-up in this area. I'm going to check with a friend that has the software and savvy to properly run the rack on this before going ahead and purchasing the .net, .org and .info extensions. It would be a little embarrasing to go ahead and purchase them and then report back here, with all the confidence that accompanies ignorance, only to leard that the whole lot is worthless. In the meantime --- thanks for your insight.

Trust me. I've found what I thought were overlooked gems before and have done the same thing only to find out that they didn't have enough searches or commercial intent.

Another thing you can do is to type the keywords in Google and see how many Adwords ads there are. If there are not many, it's a good indication that there is not a lot of interest.

As I suspected the domain I thought that "might" have some net worth is worthless.

When I changed from "broad" to "exact" searches for "an old book" on Google's Keyword Tool The global searches went from 5,400 to 36 and local searches went from 3,600 to 15.

Oh Well --- Live and learn! I'm glad I only purchased www.anoldbook in the .com and .info extensions and not the whole suite

Now if you will excuse me I think I'll crawl under a rock for a while and recover from my humiliation for starting this post.

Thanks for that handy list. All good points.

Same here. I finally decided to turn off autorenew and let hundreds expire.

And same here too! I guess it may be the only way to learn...
But, boy, don't you just feel a warm love for those useless and cute domains?

"YES" --- I sure do. Of the approx 50 that I own several were purchased 7 to 9 years ago back when everything wasn't so picked over.

Obviously I'm no authority on domains as this thread has demonstrated but given the speed of "Internet Time" I can't help but believe that someday we will regret turning in all those now seemingly worthless (but cute) domains.

Twenty years ago I could have bought islands on the Minnesota/Canadian boarder for 20K that are now worth millions. Perhaps it isn't true that domains are the real estate of cyber space/the internet but that if it "is" true. I don't want to think about it -- my head hurts --- where's that bottle of Old Potrero

Personally I would not bother but if you really are concerned then you could always make a site, if it happens to make you some money then get the other extensions later so that no one can take them

(The whole protecting your brand from other people patter the registrars use is to sell domains, unless you have a super single keyword/phrase people don't generally make sites on the same domain as someone else)
