Earning good commissions while traveling

Hello!

I live in Brazil for 6 months of the year (which is the maximum you can stay here without having a visa) and I live in England for the other 6 months of the year.

I have recently seen very positive results from IM campaigns and have started making "good" money through affiliate commissions - my question is what should I do about paying tax correclty??? I am English. I live in Brazil half the year and England the other. However, most of my income comes from U.S. citizens.

It wasn't an issue before because my earnings form IM were neglible but now I am earning a considerable (not crazy) amount of cash so I want to make sure I am not breaking any laws... Anyone in a similar situation to me?

Thanks!

I guess my question should really be:

Can you legally travel the world, with no fixed address earning a lot of money without paying tax?

Deep down I know the answer is "no" but what are the rules? Who would I pay tax too if I traveled the world??

I agree with Kim's post above.

The UK rules are complicated. But briefly, I believe that if you're British and you spend as much as 6 months of the year in the UK, it may not be easy to avoid UK income tax, unless you travel in/out of the UK a lot (e.g. flights to the Isle of Man or Channel Islands), because day of entry and day of exit don't count toward the residency total, so you can come into the UK on a Monday morning, go out on a Wednesday evening and count that as one day for the purposes of the "90-day rule" or whatever it is.

I think it is actually possible legitimately to pay no income tax, by dividing your time between two (or sometimes three) countries, if you're British and that's one of the countries and you don't spend too many days here at a time.

Not necessarily income tax, I think ... but clearly you need a UK accountant's advice.

Your very best bet is to go see an accountant (a good one) in the UK. It will be well worth the expense. If you need to be paying taxes in the UK (and I suspect you should), then you don't want to end up with a huge bill a couple of years down the line

Yeah I guess you are right Kim - thanks.

I was secretly hoping I had found a loophole in the tax system!

Thanks Alexa - I'm going to do some more research and I will certainly see an accountant when I am back in the UK.

    Valeu! (thanks in Brazilian Poruguese)
