Go to settings / privacy settings.
and you'll see "Create a public search listing for me and submit it for search engine indexing (see preview)" Click on the preview and you'll get the URL. |

That only allows a minimal version of your profile to be searchable by non-members. Your only option is to use the "personal" URL in the form of facebook.com/people/Fred-Garvin/34985756.
I think Obama must have paid for that URL or they simply offered it to him. I don't see any option for mere mortals to get a simple facebook URL like that. John McCain's and Sarah Palin's names also end up at their campaign page. No results for georgebush, billgates, or richardbranson. |

This doesn't strictly answer the question but might be a good start...
If anyone knows how, it is probably Mari Smith. Her Facebook blog has tons of excellent info. One post on creating a Fan page for your business I found particularly helpful: Why Facebook? Social Networking for Fun and Profits! by Mari Smith Blog Archive How To Create and Promote Your Facebook Fan Page Mari is a wonderful, smart lady and very approachable with something like this. Just a thought... |

Is this what you are looking for? (Please note in the example you give of BarackObama there is no .com after his name in the actual URL as there is in your example. The actual URL is http://www.Facebook.com/BarackObama)
~ Log in to Facebook ~ Once logged in go to www.Facebook.com/username ~ Pick the user name of your choice. Must be at least 5 characters long. Facebook will make suggestions for you. For a full "how to" visit: How to Get a User Name on Facebook - Info Barrel |

There was a time last year (even mentioned in this forum) when you could register your own name for FB url:
HTML Code:
http://www.facebook.com/IstvanHorvath Not any name you wanted, just your own. |
