Facebook - how do you make a personal facebook URL ?

On facebook, how do you make a personal URL link for your facebook account?

-ie, How do you make a facebook url link like this.. www.facebook.com/MYNAME.com (MYNAME being anything you wish)

instead of http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=5433452162

(^^ made up examples)

Go to settings / privacy settings.

and you'll see

"Create a public search listing for me and submit it for search engine indexing (see preview)"

Click on the preview and you'll get the URL.

That only allows a minimal version of your profile to be searchable by non-members. Your only option is to use the "personal" URL in the form of facebook.com/people/Fred-Garvin/34985756.

I think Obama must have paid for that URL or they simply offered it to him. I don't see any option for mere mortals to get a simple facebook URL like that.

John McCain's and Sarah Palin's names also end up at their campaign page. No results for georgebush, billgates, or richardbranson.
