Wordpress customized themes Vs No Theme at all?

I have seen quite of number of Wordpress blogs,
with just the "default" wordpress theme, yet,
it gets indexed by Google as 1 of the top 5 searches.

The content really isn't that special there, nor does
it beat other blogs I have also checked out.

Yet, it seems to beat other blogs with professional
and fancy themes.

Does anyone have the some findings like this?

    I have simple plain HTML sites that hands down outrank wordpress sites for competitive terms on Google.

    It's how well you optimise the site, not the theme that will perform for you.

    The theme really doesn't have anything to do with your SERP. This is because the standard wordpress theme is already optimized for basic SEO. Of course there are thousands of plugins to enhance the package, but the standard theme is very sound.

    I would look at the backlinks of said sites, as that is a more likely indicator of why they are ranking in that position.
