Exit Popups - How does a Script / Plugin know when NOT to show to pop up?

Hey guys, noob question here... I've never liked exit pop ups, but I think it could help me in a particular situation...

So, my question is, when does a script or plugin know when not to show the pop up? How does it know if a user has ALREADY signed up to my email list, and to never ever show the pop up again in history when they close my webpage?

any help would be appreciated!

      hi, thanks rashell...

Ok, duh, I shoulda known that... So basically, you tell the script what page the user has to visit for the cookie to be triggered?

So, once a visitor is on my "successful sign up page" (after signing up to a newsletter), the cookie will automatically be released on their PC...

And I'm sure it has to work like that will all exit pop ups, not just ones integrated with my Autoresponder...

The typical time span for those cookies is only 7 days. So if you are using it on a page they may visit more then once it may actually hurt you in the long run.

No the cookie will should be placed the second they arrive at your site you have the script on. In some cases it will add the cookie to their pc upon leaving but in most cases it is the second they arive at your site. Hope this helps answer your question.
