Buying Solo Email Ads

18 replies
So I just happened to stumble on a fantastic offer in the WSO section about a solo ad and I started to think that I never really see many of these offers around.

Sure, if you search on Google you'll find a tonne of them but I'm talking more specifically about people with lists targeted to the IM field and sub-niches of the IM field.

Are there any Warriors who offer this type of service or any people that you recommend?

Thanks!

    I don't know any other Warriors view on this topic, but I have use solo email ads before without much success. But they were not in the IM niche. It does not hurt to try and experiment. You can find plenty of people doing solo ads right from WF.

      The IM market is a tough one to crack, but for non-IM niche markets solo ads are IMO the second most powerful marketing method. Almost my entire online advertising budget is blown on solo ads.

        Solo adds in the IM niche can be very lucrative if you have a good and tested funnel set up.

        I think a big part of the success from them is having a solid opt in product that will get subscribers and an over delivering offer right off the bat to recoup your cost for the add.

        Split off the buyers onto another list and into your funnel, give them solid valuable content they can actually use along with products that will benefit them and you've got yourself a solid plan. Of course it takes time to test the funnel to make sure it converts, but if done right, they're great.

          Sorry;
          IM = internet marketing
          IMO = in my opinion

          It was in reference to: "... for non-IM niche markets solo ads are IMO the second most powerful marketing method..."

          Solo ads can be extremely powerful when targeted to the appropriate niche of ezine subscribers. It is almost exclusively my method of paid online advertising.

      I love solo ads and can't believe more people in IM don't use them.

      It's not really for beginners though. I'm happy if we can do a "7 day break even" on the ads we buy. For example if I spend $250 on a solo ad that produces 100 optins to an email list ($2.5 an opt in!) and between the upsell and the follow up marketing, if I make that $250 back within 7 days I'm happy because I just added 100 leads to my list for free.

      I find it takes about 5 ads to get a winner if you do everything ELSE right. It's about finding people who sell ads who deliver on what they say and who send decent traffic. The thing is, you can't be in it for the short term. you go through 5, get 1 that works, and then buy as many as you can from that one until it no longer brings in leads at break even.

      Then repeat process.

      When it has all been said and done I've added close to 4,000 people to my list in the last 2 years at an overall profit from buying solo ads.

        Jason, I agree with what you said here. Thats why it is a bit scary for newbies to jump right in and start buying ads. I know I lost some money on my first few. Its almost like buying adwords. The better your testing is, the quicker you will see profitable results.

        With that being said, if you are interested in buying solo ads, you have to learn somehow. Dont start out by purchasing a 1000 clicks. Instead find someone who will get you a 100 clicks. After that ad, chage up your opt-in page a bit and buy another 100. Also, always try to offer a OTO after folks opt-in. Something low cost like $7-$12 will do and should help you get some of your money back.

        With that money, re-invest.

          This is good advice, a solid plan. As were Jason's and Bryan's ideas along the same lines. I just want to point out that you need to have somewhere to go with the people who sign up. Get some upsells, cross-sells, or at least one solidly converting paid product in your funnel before you start paying for the traffic in a big way. Treat it like a business. Because your list IS a business unto itself.

            Agreed! This is a mistake I made in the beginning. Did a solo ad buy, had a good freebie to get them in, then I had nothing to sell them on from there! I figured I would figure it out later. Never did. Money down the drain!

        I would use them more if I knew a more reliable way to find the publications where I would want to advertise.

    I think a key point has been made here. Just buying solo ads alone, without a solid sales funnel proven to deliver conversions, is foolhardy. Jason makes a very good point that this definitely isn't for beginners. If you're contemplating using solo ads, I'd recommend you have (at the very least) a squeeze page with a good freebie product that has been proven to convert, preferably with a product (either yours or affiliate) that the opt-in visitor is inclined to buy.

    Unless you have these bare essentials in place first, it'd be better to stay away from solo ads for the time being.

      @ entry

      Your mileage may vary, so it would be meaningless to you what others have done. I've been doing this for many years, and even I have made some major (and very costly) blunders.

      What you might want to do is check out solo-ads.com. (not affiliated in any way) You can play around with it for free, because you earn advertising credits by reading other subscribers' ads. There is even a paid option where you can send up to 3,000 for $25.

      Once you get a good conversion system going, then check out other sources of advertising as referenced in this thread or in the JV forum. BTW, I still use solo-ads.com quite often to test out new ideas.

    Pat, not sure if you know this but there is a section of this forum for finding Solo Ads and other JVs with people - Warrior Joint Ventures

    I've had some decent success with this but just be cautious as there are some big claims with some people.

      I actually had a look in the "Classified Ads" section for the first time and there seems to be heaps of people offering Solo Ad's in there, so if anyone else reading this is also interested it might be a good idea to check out that section.
