I want to ask you: What's the next facebook awaiting for us?

There were tons of social networking sites, local and global ones, all of them were more or less equally popular, but facebook took over control of social networking sites, by adding such features that no one else could came up with.

So, what you think, what will come after the facebook, or it's here to stay?

At this point it seems that you can't add anything else "gamechanging", but I bet you can always come up with a new thing.

Actually I really think social communities are always growing and evolving until one day some guy (or gal) get a better concept and crate something more appealing for the masses and then... you got a new social platform more powerful than the last one.

It's exactly what happens with myspace, now almost nobody remembers my space because everyone change to facebook, it's just a matter of time, I think.

Yes, that's really what my question is - what you think will be the new social thing

Well, I really don't know because right now facebook got everything we know until now (share info, videos, websites, polls, links, etc.) but do you remember the Internet without youtube?

On those days we already think the internet was complete, until somebody got a great idea.

    As in "connected"?
I would say that Facebook already knows everything there is to know about everyone.
Next big step should be a government run social network (like GIECO is to insurance) and an implanted RFID chip. ha ha!

Facebook has really done it by incorporating everything into their network. You have videos, music, friends, pages, the like button, photos, fb ads, and much more. Facebook has millions of users and anything that tries to scale up and beat it will have some trouble overcoming Facebook. They can do well but they will not exceed Facebook because Facebook is so Global right now

Hmm maybe I should change the question a bit, and ask not "what will be the new facebook" but "what will be in new in the facebook". You mentioned "Like" button.

Seems stupidly simple, but yet again it became internet phenomena. Even the word "like" is used more oftenly in the offline world now

I remember a few years back myspace seemed unstoppable, they were king! then without warning facebook came with a better model for social media which allowed webmasters to partake by creating applications and ppc features which myspace did not have inplace then the rest was history.

I think all it takes is for the next lil genius to come up with an idea that can turn facebook on its head upside down, the word will be out, the buzz will be on the street and facebook will be no more

But it's really surprising. For example YouTube. Everyone were hosting videos on their own pages that could be played with flash or with windows media player. Video sharing was already here, but it was just a bit inconvinient. And youtube guys had this idea.

I guess you need to start thinking outside the box, or be able to see old things in new perspective in order to make something amazing.

What I am thinking is that you need to come up with an idea that facebook model could NOT use. I mean that the idea should radically change the whole facebook.

So if your site is offering something new it will have the value of competition for facebook, because they cannot provide that feature.

It's not only about coming up with something new, but also making it uncomfortable for other, existing social networks to implemend. That's what I think

But google fails at copying websites, and they end up in buying them. Google videos, or google buzz - they never became that popular to become a threat to main project.

One thing that facebook does that I can't stand is block certain messages that you don't want the whole world to see. Maybe you can and I never figured it out, but a lot of people I know are already looking for something new.

Whatever it is, it will be something that you can use to connect through your mobile phone. maybe where you can share experiences not just comments.

Facebook is the proverbial sliced bread in the kitchen cupboard. Sure, you can have grains, wholemeal, brown, white, thick or thin... but at the end of the day, it's a loaf of bread.

I think the next big thing will be what you spread the bread with.

Or, something else to spread condiments on, rather than baked flour and yeast.

I suspect it will come out of the blue from somebody who had the idea to create the next big thing. It will just kinda happen like Facebook.

      Just my 2 cents

I think this time round the 'next big thing' will take a long time. Facebook are at such a dominating position pretty much worldwide, it will take a hell of a lot of value to shift 500million users elsewhere.

The next big thing will embrace Facebook, not compete against it, in my opinion.

I recommend the book "The Facebook Effect" - it's an excellent read with some great 'pub' facts to take away and tell people!

Can you remember the internet without YouTube?

Video streaming already existed but YouTube blew everything else out of the water and made it easy to share and view content but this was only possible with increased internet speeds.

While South Korea plans to roll out 1GBit/s in the near future, I live in Thailand where a few MBit/s (despite claims by the ISP) is a real luxury. I think it might be something related to file sharing; film and music production companies are spending billions to beat file-sharing with a legislative baseball bat but they can only slow things down.

I think if they embraced the online distribution system and high speeds were readily available worldwide, we'd see some really cool things being done.

With regards to social networks, I think we're going to see increased activity from all aspects of our life. As someone pointed out, Facebook is the bread, we're going to see more toppings and fillings e.g. your local government being active on Twitter of Facebook and seeking out your thoughts and complaints.

Facebook won't be top dog forever. It just won't.

I remember when Yahoo was the big thing. If anyone suggested something like "Who will be the next Yahoo?", they'd get the same kinds of responses you see in this thread.

Then came Google. Yahoo isn't the big thing anymore.

It's hard to predict what will topple Facebook. But, odds are that something will.

Yes but Facebook have been clever enough to build a social platform that can continually change with the times - and it will.

I don't see Facebook leaving us any time soon. We as humans have a need to interact with one another and never has there been a solution that allowed us to do it so easily.

Face Book has already reached a saturation point and people are getting bored with it, have you not noticed lately that there is nothing interesting to do when you log in to facebook other then just looking at your frnds pics or some funny comments, like it was in orkut once. I believe the craze will be over soon and die away faster then what we can predict. On the other hand google will stay as google search provides us with really valuable information on net ..

It's like saying people are getting bored with email. Any boredom is not to do with the service itself, it's to do with the content on that service. If I keep getting boring emails from a friend of mine I am not going to say I am bored of email - I am simply bored of certain emails from a certain person.

Facebook is the new way people communicate these days. If you find your friends lives boring then yes, you will find Facebook boring and any other social network that pops up. You cannot get a much better or complete social platform than Facebook for communicating with your friends and family.

I think even today's brightest new developers would be hard-pressed to come up with something that competes with Facebook. I think we're more likely to see huge additions to the Facebook layout - like the recent release of Facebook email addresses, etc.

I think Facebook will stay on top for a while, but that's just my opinion.

What about 3D platforms like Secondlife? I wish sometime there will be a virtual world online and everyone interacting with each other as in games like Sims. Integrating social networking features, online shopping, file sharing, everything through a virtual world. Second life and gaia online have some basic features of this concept. People can chat with random persons they come across on streets through voice and video support if they wish. Synchronize the virtual world with something like satellite maps or google earth. Open up virtual malls on each and every corner of the street. 3D shops, live music concerts, multiplayer gaming, everything in a social world. Let Paypal open up virtual banks on major cities .. . .
