What is the best way to monetize newly acquired domain traffic

It depends on how your traffic is getting there, i.e. keywords etc. There are a tonne of ways to monetize - clickbank, cpa, amazon - to name a few. What type of site is it?

Have a look in your awstats or set up a tracking program to find out how they get to your site. It's hard to tell when they go to pages not there anymore, so this would be your best bet in finding out and then setting up pages similar to those non-existent pages and monetize them accordingly. We don't know your niche or keywords, so it's not easy to suggest something ecommerce or info-product related.

Alternatively, you could also try to transform your 404 page into some kind of landing page that is relevant to the niche of that domain.

Thank you for your responses. It looks like there is no specific niche and it is ranked for hundreds of different non related words. It looks like it was a torrent site before.I have edited 404 page and added some ads to it to earn some adsense revenue but CTR is very low and I am getting like $0.10 per click. Any other ideas?

Edit your 404 page to look almost the same as the standard one, however add a link to the main site and say something like "Is this the page you were looking for". I think there may be a WP plugin which helps in cases like yours, not sure what it's called though.
