How do you protect your butt as an IMer sitting down all day every day?

I have been a keyboard jockey since my youth but since doing IM I am even more so and set to be for the foreseeable future.

This is fine and dandy as it is the fate I have chosen for myself but I've found my butt can really get sore from all these long hours.

I get up now and then to eat and toilet butt :p otherwise I'm always on my butt.

Near early evening I usually have a sore butt however this is only halfways into my day of solid computer time...

What to do?

It isn't practical for me yet to shell for a full on orthopedic/ergonomic computer chair (something to treat myself to once I become an IM success). Atm I'm trying to change things up with a pillow under the seat. Another thing I've thought of is getting a laptop so then I can move around my house but again financial reasons restrict that option for now.

Any other DIY solutions?

The hazardous lifestyle of the IMer...

Squats and deadlifts are good for dem glutes and lower back. Do a few hours in the gym every week, it will do you good!

I sit on a comfortable couch or chair with my laptop so don't have that problem unless I am working in a public library or something. I agree then that it can be a problem

Haha answer the door in one of these babies, easy way to scare doorknockers off.

By the way I think the BEST thing you can do is go for a run. It's good exercise, fresh air and exercising those muscles that don't get used as often as they should. As people above me said, regular breaks and a comfy chair and you should be right.

I also agree with JackPowers and highly recommend squats and deadlifts. You can't get a sore butt if you have buns of STEELE

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've never laughed so much or so loud in a long time - nearly choked on my Ferrero Rocher!

I know every visit to WF is of real benefit - I learn something new every time but the bonus for me is the great sense of humour of fellow-Warrior members.

I laughed even more when another Warrior set my imagination going with "answer the door in one of these babies, easy way to scare doorknockers off!"

I'd say get a rebounder (used to be called trampoline.) Use it several times a day during your IM work day... It has all kinds of benefits, and I'd be very surprised if it would not alleviate your issue after systematic use...

    Here's what I do:
    • I have a baby and a very energetic dog, so every night I get off my butt, throw the baby in the stroller, and push her around outside while walking the dog. In total I go about 4.5km's. It takes an hour, but it gets me and the dog exercised, and the baby usually falls asleep for the night so it's a win-win activity.
    • After going repeatedily to a physiotherapist for neck/back issues from sitting on my butt, she told me the best thing I can do is stand up every hour and walk around for a minute. Sounds really silly, but it actually made a massive difference, so I get up at the top of every hour and walk around the house, take the dog outside, check the mail, make coffee, or whatever. My back/neck actually hardly ever gets sore when I'm doing this, and it only means I have to give up about 2-3 minutes of every hour when I'm working.

Some earnest replies for a serious modern man's issue .

LOL! just looking at the tags at the bottom cracked me up as I read 'butt day'.

I think the main issue is that even my leisure activities included sitting at my comp...watching erm...various internet videos, computer games etc.

I've been actively looking to add more non computer based pastimes in- taken up the violin which is a happy respite.

Doing weights again would prob be a good idea I just got so bored of doing them. Maybe a quick set o squats etc. for health benefits would be ok rather than for building size.

This is one of the funniest posts I've read recently, even though I know it's a "serious" issue for many of us.

I use a plush pillow to ease my butt discomfort. When it gets too much to bare, I just get up and walk around a bit.

Hey, this is a great new product idea for all of you entrepreneurial warriors out there. Get busy inventing a comfortable butt pad for all of us hard working chair jockeys.

LOL, yes, some giant balls at that.

The big ones you can blow up with a pump, and use for exercise, you can sit on them too.

Get a firmer one, and get the right height, and you can sit and roll a bit.

It forces you to use your mid section and you actually will burn a few hundred calories a day as well.

I almost fell out of my chair on that one

Okay my solution, get a comfy chair and also get a small cushion or something and put it on the chair when you sit.

Or, do Insanity by Shawn T (workout program). That thing will keep you sore all day long and you won't even feel the pain in your butt

Trust me, I am on day 3 and my body is aching like a bitch.

I have had some fairly extensive experience with those balls. When I was involved in a somewhat serious car accident several years ago (no real harm was done, but the attorney prescribed a fairly lengthy course of chiropractic treatment over 4 months with a gorgeous chiropractor and her bevy of attractive assistants ), we did a lot of sitting and balancing exercises on the medical ball.

She prescribed sitting on the medical ball in lieu of a chair for at least several hours per day to strengthen my back and encourage correct posture, and I found it pretty fun to sit on the ball. It'd be next to impossible to get sore butt while using the ball, because your core is taking a lot of pressure and weight off your butt if you're sitting correctly on the ball.

This is a really funny but true topic!! You must incorporate exercise in your day - at least 3x per week. I try to do yoga and swim as much as I can. It's really important to get our of your chair and stretch every once in a while so you stay loose!

Hope this helps and here's to a non - smooshy butt!

I've been sitting at a computer since 1985. Trust me if you have a soar butt from sitting don't let it get any worse. I literally could not sit at all for 2 months. Thanks to a very skilled acupuncturist I am doing fine now, but I cannot sit for long unless I sit on a special pillow that I had made.

I tried a lot of different things to sit on but I could not sit for long on any of them. So I simply went to custom foam mattress store and asked them to cut a piece of 3 inch dense foam to a shape I had drawn on piece of cardboard, to fit my chair and had the area that bothered me cut out. It cost me $29 Canadian should be less in the US. I also had one made for my car on long drives.

A skilled acupuncturist can help if it gets bad, but the treatment is very painful. So I learned my lesson I now get up and move around a bit every hour. My acupuncturist taught me to get up and just sake my whole body. Looks silly as hell but it circulates blood back into the compressed places in my back and butt.

      Here's wishing you butt relief.

I had a similar experience & mentioned it to my doctor. He told me this can become a serious issue. As funny a topic this is to some, a sore bottom is not fun.

I bought a new office chair with more cushion & sometimes I use a pillow. I even changed the seat on my bicycle for more comfort. Taking breaks and moving around helps as well.

I move my laptop around to different places and chairs but sometimes I get so caught up in what I do, it seems I never get up to do it.

Another method I do: I use a free standing table top that fits over my walking machine. (it's pretty tall) Even if I am walking at a slow pace of 2 to 2.5 miles per hour, I am active. I can read emails or other repetitive tasks while I walk real slow. They have real expensive machines like this but I just had my husband make me one up after I saw this in a magazine somewhere.
Kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Sometimes just standing on my machine and working on a high table is enough of a change of scenery for my butt !

I have the same problem. But I only work for 2 hours at a time. for now until I can change my situation as well.
I found that working 2 hours and having a good break where I get up and walk around for at least a half an hour not only makes my buttocks and back feel better, but my brain gets unclogged, and I generally get in a better mood and end up more positive!
The only problem with taking a half hour break every 2 hours is that my working time gets extended.

I actually had a killer back problem until recently. I suddenly looked at my desk & office chair, then looked at the coffee table and arm chair and thought WTF am I doing?

    So now here's my setup:

** Monitor on the coffee table.
** Box next to the coffee table
** Mouse mat on a little side table
** Sit in a super comfy arm chair all day long!

I haven't had a single ache or pain since I adopted this setup AND I'm more productive because I'm so relaxed.

Armchair + coffee table for the win.

This ultimately makes you more productive as well. Trying to focus on something for an extended period of time without getting up for breaks/rest is actually counterproductive, so one of the things you could do is run a little timer on your computer (or have a physical stopwatch/timer beside it) to remind you to get up every now and then.

WOW - we have some great comedians on this posting - a good laugh and a quick walk away from the work centre on an hourly basis is essential for butt health!
The old fashioned remedy to prevent bedsores was to give a good rub with methylated spirits and change the patients position - maybe this is something that may help with sore butts? Make sure that there are no breaks in the skin as it could create some serious pain issues.

Ergohuman ergonomic chair! and a humanscale freedom chair. I have both cranial supports and the works built in, 80 lb chairs and I switch between them with my partner throughout the day, so we never sit in one chair for the whole day, switch positions and chairs and then like I do, run, exercise, and take some breaks and get blood flow. FYI, the chairs are really a winner, one is $1200 and the other was only $650, pricey, but if you are in them like I am all the time, it's money! Then get 3 30 inch LG screens to complete the style I love mine! overkill but well worth the biz money spent using some of what would have otherwise been uncle sams tax revenue!

No butt issues anymore ... its all calloused. (I actually have more pain in my right forearm (mouse arm) than anything).

I get up at least once an hour to play a few minutes with the cats, go shovel snow, or do dishes or vacuuming and in the summer I will weed the garden for a bit, go for a walk or just have a coffee outside for a while. When on the phone I pace and stretch.

There is nothing wrong in taking a couple of hours out of the day to do some strenuous exercise such as running & bike work until sweat starts pouring off. This is an everyday exercise and then relax at your computer and dose off. Thats my suggestion...

Even though it's quite funny, it needs to be seriously dealt with, to avoid unwanted complications out of the lifestyle we choose to live with.

Sitting on a comfy chair for long hours can also prove fatal at some point of time.

      • Visit to the Gym atleast 4 times a week.
      • 30 mins of brisk walk everyday twice.
      • Streching yourself once in a while
      • Most importantly WATCH OUT FOR THE DIET

I suppose sweaty butt might be alleviated somewhat by wearing loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibers?

Seriously, if you limit your computer sessions to no more than 30-60 minutes at a time (broken up by short breaks in between), I see absolutely no reason why sore butt should be an issue.

      1. I get out and about every day. Take a brisk walk in to Tennoji (main station and shopping area). Just to stretch the legs and get the circulation moving. And to get away from the computer.

      2. At least twice a week to the gym for high-intensity weight training.

      3. Every Monday, off for a 15-20 km run/hike through the mountains. Get some fresh air, a psych lift, and intense exercise.

      Use it or lose it!

You can buy special cushions fairly cheaply online.

I also suggest the squats and dead lifts. I would also add on face pulls (you can find them on youtube). These will help your upper back posture to stop you slouching and getting a hump on your back.

I also have one of them big balls mention above by avenuegirl. They are great for exercising. Just hide them if you are having a party in your house: nothing worse than getting hit on the back of the head by a giant ball when you are talking to someone.

  • Short jogging sessions around the neighborhood for 15 or 20 minutes, followed by a quick shower and back to work. They work wonders... Now if I could bring myself to be more consistent with my own advise...

The water trick is a good one. I know this from playing live poker in a card room and sitting in lousy chairs for hours. I started drinking lots of water and it would force me to not only get up and whiz but to take some short breaks as well. Does wonders.

Oh yea, a good chair is a must. Same goes if you are in a job where you are on your feet all day: Good shoes FTW!
