videos / autoplay / best service

hey there!

I have my site at www.lunchboxdiet.co.uk and recently discovered that my site load time is really slow and that this is mainly being caused by the autoplay video which is currently hosted by ezs3.

I have a youtube version, but on that it's showing ads.

What do you think would be a better solution for me?

Regards

Simon

As far as I can see it is not the EZS3 video that is causing your problems. It is one of the last things to load. I am using EZS3 on my sites and have no problems with it whatsoever.

The things that are causing your site to load so slowly are the images and other scripts you are using. Here are just some of them:

    howtolosebellyfat.jpg (173KB)
    camerondiazdiet.jpg (142KB)
    js/prototype.js?ver=1.6.1 (139KB)
    js/jquery/jquery.js?ver=1.4.2 (72KB)
    lynsmall1.jpg (67KB)
    lead-generator.png (41KB)
    style.css (38KB)
    js/scriptaculous/effects.js?ver=1.8.3 (38KB)
    js/scriptaculous/controls.js?ver=1.8.3 (34KB)

And they are just the main offenders. There is over 700KB just listed above that has to load before any of the video even has a chance of loading.

The TOTAL size of your page is 1244087 bytes or in simple terms, over 1.2 MB. That is huge! And your page has 116 http requests. That means a user has to request 116 separate files from your server just to show that one simple page.

Clearly the EZS3 video is not the problem here. I'm not sure who did your coding but for such a simple page design they have done an awful job. It's no wonder your page takes forever to load. I have never seen such a huge css style sheet (38KB) for such a simple page design - that is ridiculous. There are hardly even any styles used on your page - certainly not enough to require a css style sheet anywhere near that size.

A page like yours, including all those graphics, could be in the 100 - 200KB range by someone who knows what they are doing. Some of the very long sales pages you will see are only a couple of MB in size and they are much much longer than your page.

I don't mean to sound harsh, I'm just surprised as I don't think I have ever seen a page that small, have a file size quite so large. At least you now know the problem and can get it fixed.

Do you recommend video autoplay or let the customer click on the play video button?

I recommend testing both versions and seeing which gives the best results. Obviously from an end-user standpoint, letting them press the play button is a better option - but this isn't necessarily what will result in the most sales.
