Ugh, total information overload. Where to start?

Hey everybody:

As the title says, I'm on a total information overload right now. I'm coming to mainstream marketing after having been in adult (had success there, but the market in adult is just plummeting for the small gal).

I'm pretty versed in technology (as in websites and everything that goes along with it) and feel that I'm a pretty good author. But, Jesus, there are so many options in mainstream that I didn't know about. It is scary, to say the least.

So, I'm here at your mercy -- where would you recommend that somebody like me begins in mainstream marketing? I wouldn't consider myself a newbie, but I wouldn't consider myself a "vet" either. Just lost in a completely different world of money-making here.

Any advice you can provide would be awesome. I'm all ears over here!

You need to find something that works for you and expand on it. I know that sounds so un helpful but as you said... There is so much you can do.

If I was starting where you are I would probably look at building a niche site around a keyword phrase that gets at least 1000 Exact matches monthly with low competition. One mistake I made when I first began was building a site in a competitive niche and targeting really competitive keywords. I found out that doing proper kw research to start with and building a site optimized for that works out better for me.

Monetize the site with Adsense, CPA offers, or Affiliate programs or a mixture. Hope this helps ya get started...

Thank you! Hearing things like that are very useful.

Keyword research has always been sort of a weak point for me.

So, I should find something with about 1000 global searches a month? Should I search that keyword on Google and see how many competing sites there are? How many is good? I can string together question after question on just keyword research.

That happened to me, to, and unfortunately spent more than I should have in adwords. I am trying to focus on one product or website and build around it using articles, forums, blog posts etc. I've had to ignore most of the email I get touting the latest "must haves" to make my business grow. I'm taking it slowly for now.

          Couple of quick tips

          1. Get gooood at KW research. Its vital.
Use the exact match facility in adwords kw tool. it won't appear (oddly) until you have requested at least one search already. Midway down left hand side.

          2. The number of competing sites is a mirage. Although some here keep repeating it, it don't matter in the least.
All that counts is the SEO power of the top 10. thats your competition.
For example, there may be 500m page matches for a given keyword but no1 in Google has 5 backlinks - you'd be at the top pretty easily (Ok, its not quite as simple as that, but its true in principle.)

          3. So -you need to target a niche that has good traffic and also has poor competition SEO-wise.

Big tip - (I'm not an affiliate) Get Market Samurai or such tool. It will tell you both no of searches but also competitive power of the top 10 in that space.

If all the lights on teh board are red, don't go in that space.
          Good luck.

Absolutely correct, don't waste your time with the number of competitors, it is the strength of the competitor in position one that you have to beat. Some competitors are not very strong.

Some pretty good advice all around.

It would seem that the general consensus is to build a blog promoting a product, and using AdSense on the blog?
