OK - don't do this, but...

Every time I used to notice a "SPAM POST..."

I'd RESPOND to the spammer.

WOW...

Stupid, right?

Listen... Just REPORT that fool! And INFRACT him while you're at it!

C'mon. Spammers are trying to "play" the game?

    Sounds like a total waste of time if you ask me. I personally do not have time to moderate this forum nor do I get compensated in any way to do so. What you call a spammer someone else may call an inexperienced newbie that needs a little direction.

    But hey.. it's your time.

        Who am I to judge someone who may or may not be spamming. I'm not the spam police. I'm not going to comb through tons of threads looking for a post that might be a spammer. If you want to do this then be my guest buddy. You have more time than I do.

        Besides, I don't just smooch off this forum. I also make contributions to members when I can and am able to help. This forum makes plenty of money and could hire some dedicated people to be the spam police. Or they could just rely on people with a lot of time on their hands and the want to feel like they are helping. And that's fine, more power to ya.

          I guess for some of us it's all about the money. I don't get paid to be a cop either but if I see someone cruising the neighborhood or on my neighbor's property I am going to confront them. This forum is my neighborhood.

          BTW, the mods do a great job of policing the forum and I'm usually not cluing them in on anything that they don't already know, but again, this is a community or neighborhood.

          As far as replying to spammers or trolls? It used to be a hobby and I found great delight in messing with them on Friday and Sat nights just for S&G.

                Just to clear up any misconceptions in this thread. I am not a bad guy and I am not someone who does not care about this forum even though I am pretty new here. I do however want to manage my time to the best of my ability and have lost tons of hours on forums in the past. I'm just trying to make it like everyone else...

          You don't have to look through the whole forum to find spammers.

          If you come across one, just click the report button and move on.

      I love the way you think a spammer could be a poor little newbie in need of some direction.

      But before that, you said you have no desire to moderate the forum because you're not getting paid for it. If hitting a report button is beyond your scope without some form of financial reward, I'd hardly see you about to offer a newbie even the slightest hint of direction.

      And yes it is my time, I'm just so happy we don't all have your attitude or the place would be overrun with spammers, sorry, people requiring direction. :rolleyes:

      As for combing the forum looking for spammers that's not how it works. If I come across a spammer, it takes all of 10 seconds to report it, no big deal at all. I certainly don't think I'm the "spam police".

      Still, if it helps you get through the day who am I to care.

        You make some valid points.

        But yes, I always give people the benefit of the doubt first. When I first began, I had no clue and put up banner farms with 468x60 banners right down the middle of the page all the way down. I was only doing what I thought worked and how things were done. I needed direction.

        I believe I said I did not have time to police this forum. I did state that I wasn't being compensated in any way to do so, yes. And if you don't think I offer newbies the slightest hint of direction as you put it, maybe you should take a look at my post history.

        Finally, I am happy you don't have my attitude as well. Otherwise, I would not have found myself in a complete time wasting thread today.

          As Gary said, it's not a requirement anyway and I haven't seen your post history so shouldn't have implied that. I was just hypothetically musing over the fact that you appeared not to want to do things without financial compensation. That was me judging you and that's not fair, so I apologise on that count.

              Another reason to not reply to spammers...

              It could get you banned, at least accidentally.

              Yep! It happened to me. I used to LOVE messing with spammers. I would tell them their link wasn't working for me. Then they would respond saying it should work. Then I'd say that it was NOT working for me.

              Of course I never told them it wasn't working for me because I wasn't actually clicking on the link!

              But man, I could just picture them going into panic mode, checking their site, coding, host and anything else.

              So, one time I did that and the post was deleted...and so was my account. It was only for about 5 minutes, but ALL of the threads I had started up to that point were GONE, permanently. This included a very successful WSO with page after page of positive testimonials (which I hadn't copied).

              Luckily the problem was caught before everything disappeared.

              While I would still like to mess with spammers, I've learned my lesson and just click the red triangle instead.

    It's easy to want to say something to a spammer because they are so annoying, but you're right. It's better to just report them instead of getting into an efight with them.

      To each their own Larry - I think most only report what they happen to run into - e.g. - you run across a post that doesn't fit with the community vs spending hours looking for them... but again, it's certainly not a requirement.

    I think in all the confusion here the original point is lost:

    Bottom line: DON'T RESPOND TO THE SPAM POST

    You don't even have to police it (if taking 15 seconds to push the button and typing "spam" is too much to ask) . Just don't respond and bump the thread.

    And for god's sake - DON'T QUOTE THE SPAM POST.
