Niche domain names, advice before I pull the trigger

Hey guys.

Well, I finally got my head around the whole niche criteria search, thanks to Ryan Stevenson.

Following Ryans steps, I'm going for an exact keyword phrase .com, either for an amazon product, or search words, for that product.

basic criteria,

More than 200 exact monthly matches
No more than 30,000 exact "keyword" results
allintitle:"niche market" result, lower than 10,000... they're much less, around 300

It took a couple of hours, but I found 2 really good niches.

Niche 1 has 1000 exact matches per month, and has a decent variety of products on amazon, $20 up to $300

Nice 2, is almost the same.

The thing is, I found 16 .coms, all with very strong keywords, and on average 500 exact keyword matches per month.

What's the best practice here, buy all the domains, and make lots of little amazon affiliate sites?

Just buy a few of the strongest, and just optimize the other keywords in my sites?

Is it worth paying nearly $160 for the domains?

Cheers

Assuming these keywords are all related to the same niche, it's almost certainly better off to buy and build one-two large domains rather than 16 tiny ones.

First of all, an exact match domain is powerful, but not enough to rank #1 without some SEO effort, and you'll see barely any traffic with 500 monthly searches if you're not #1. You're going to have to put work into building and SEOing 16 different domains... or you can put it all on one domain. I've also found that once your website starts to pick up a little bit of authority, it becomes a lot easier to rank for separate keywords on different pages.

3rdly, in the event that you're perhaps doing something wrong, it's easier to fix or recover from 1 bad website rather than 16.

Obviously, it's a lot cheaper, too.

What's everyones opinion on taking a large proportion of these websites dependent on price of course and fixing one to stop anyone else intruding on your niche? Would this be advisable if your working knowledge of SEO's etc isn't great? In order to give yourself the time to develop your skills.

Maybe you take them all and develop the ones you like.
The rest of them you could try selling to end users for a profit.

I've taken both approaches in the past and would favor building up one domain and getting rankings for multiple products on that domain...it'll save you time, money, and be easier to manage.

Your rankings may just take a bit longer to come though...

Using the allintitle search is a waste of time.

The number of "competitors" does not matter.

500 exact searches is not a lot, at all. At most, expect 50% of the traffic - 250. Account for a 10% CTR on your aff links - 25. Account for 10% would buy something - 2.5. With a $500 product, thats only $40/mo.

Is that really worth the time?

Thanks for the feedback, all y'ol.

mgtarheels, ye, pretty low numbers there alright.

The main keyword is 1000 though, not 500.

If I'm targeting the other keywords, there's 10 in this niche, each with an average of 400, I'd be pulling in some of that traffic also, ye?

There's not too much competition, and it's a good niche to start a blog with also...

The model I'm working off, is to have many shops, I'd plan to work on this one, get it right, then, rince and repeat, as they say... if we were to double your number, so $80pm, if I had 10 of these ticking over, I'd be happy with that.

If you want my two cents I absolutely think this is the right thing to do for a first website. I would probably just get the one domain and ask someone you trust on the forum whether you are doing things the right way.

If you go down the route of building sites that are going to pull in around 1000 visitors a month then just bare in mind that you are going to need 50-100 to pull in good money.

I can assure there are hundreds of people on this very forum that would not turn there nose up at 50 sites earning $50-$100 a month, whether they like to admit or not is another question.

I'd recommend you buy the strongest ones right now and build those out first. It's easy to spread yourself too thin when you tap into a lot of quality keywords that you want to start ranking for.

If you do want to rank for additional keywords under those domain names (instead of creating a new domain) then set it up with the keyword in your sub domain. It's better to have it in a sub domain than to try to cram everything in a main domain name.

However, if you have quality keywords that you want to rank then just build individual websites. But most importantly, don't take on more than you can handle.

It can get real discouraging when you have your many domains all on page 2 or 3. Best to just rank a few the top first page so you can make some money and then reinvest your profits to build out another successful campaign.
