When someone copies your WSO and creates one based on your WSO, what should you do?

I've been informed this is happening right now....

    How "copied" is it?

If yours is a PDF, and their's is a video course, and it doesn't seem to be read from your pdf, then I don't think there is much you can do about it.

A lot of what is sold in the WSO forum is similar to one another.

I mean, how many way's can you say:

    1. Find a market.
    2. Find what they need.
    3. Give it to them.

There are all kinds of aspects of it, of course.

So unless it is downright copy theft, then you can't do anything.

Otherwise, go to the helpdesk and report the WSO. That's all you can do.

      Mine's a PDF theirs is a PDF.

It is impossible to have the same context without it being a copy of mine.

Impossible... trust me. I've been around long enough.

For example, my Google Places WSO (no, that's not the one) there are MANY Google Places WSO's. I know there's some overlap with GPlaces -that's common sense.

But the one I am referring to... is so unique. Any similarities would definitely be a copy of mine.

Not sure there is much you can do unless they are copying the text word for word. It's a matter of pride and ethics; Some people have none. There are those who look for good selling WSOs and will try to knock them off almost immediately.

The fact is that some people, (not all by any means) do not have the creativity or experience to create a quality product of their own and they make a WSO business of hacking out substandard WSOs imitating others and foisting them off on newbies week after week.

The best thing to do is to create very high quality products that will be the very best on the topic. Remember, two can play at that game. While ideas can't be copyrighted, if you find people are coming very close to word for wording your material... well, be creative. They are bottom feeders and like I said, it's a matter of pride and they have none.

Some people will think I am being harsh and giving people hell. I'm not, they just think it's hell because they know the shoe fits. --Mike

Well if it's that unique, then report it to the helpdesk.

Send them a copy of your PDF and then buy a copy of the other guys PDF and send them that as well.

That will get them shut down if it's worded similarly enough.

But people in this thread are correct - you cannot patent/copyright/trademark idea's. If he takes your idea and rewords it completely until it's his own, then I'm afraid there isn't anything you can do about it.

      Uh yes there is.

If the idea is unique enough.

I will in fact contact the help desk.

I don't want to argue US Copyright Law, but idea's cannot be copyrighted, no matter how unique it is: From the US Governments Copyright Website:

U.S. Copyright Office - What Does Copyright Protect? (FAQ)

How do I protect my idea?
Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work.

So, no, you cannot copyright ideas. You can copyright the idea as written on paper (or electronic paper). But if someone completely rewrites your method with completely different words, then you have no recourse.

I'm not saying the guy is right or wrong in doing it, just that there is nothing legally you can do about it.

"Based on" your WSO means that your unlikely to be able to respond hugely to this. As ccmusicman says there is very little copyright law that you can successfully uphold when it comes to the internet. Although if you can get an address (not email) you can send some pretty scary legal letters that might make them think twice.

I'm not sure you're going to be able to do much with this, most IM products are simply a rehash of another product these days. It all becomes very jumbled, and short of someone copying you word for word....

Copyright applies only to the created work, not ideas.

If the work is copied it's a problem, if the idea is copied...not much you can do.

I believe here follows general US copyright law.

The mod's will not listen to debate about what is unique and new and what is not.

      What if you're lying?

What if the other guy invented the idea first and you just released the WSO first?

It quickly becomes a he said/she said, and there is no evidence to back either up.

I've been running WSOs for a while now, and I'm quite familiar with what happens in that section.

The only way you are going to get an answer is with the help desk. And if they decide that the other WSO is worded uniquely enough, then that is that, and you have no recourse.

Sorry, but that is the way it is.

Sorry but I've been here longer than you and know how the mods treat these issues.

We'll see how this turns out now, won't we? My ticket is open.
And lol @ "what if you're lying".. really?
    LOL.

Congrats on losing your credibility and making my ignore list.

      Then.....I'm confused.

If you know how things work here, and you've been around so long, and you are belittling people for trying to help, why start the thread?

Unless it's to draw attention to your "very unique" WSO.

      And?

I have more posts than you and 1000 more thanks.

What difference does any of that make?

But you're right - you'll get an answer from them. None of us knows how it will go.

And for the record, if you're right, then I hope the thief get's busted and hauled out of the WSO section. We don't need more copy/paste rip off's in that section.

After that post and others where you're being rude and condescending to warriors who are trying to give you advice, your credibility is the one taking a hit.

And what's the point of this thread? That's between you, the person you believe is copying you and the help desk since they can review the documents and make a decision.

The rest of us can just give you our two cents worth of opinion. And to watch you throw those two cents back in the face to those who are just trying to help you is amazing.

If you can't handle suggestions that you don't like then what's the point of posting asking for advice? Good gravy.

If you don't know that the point of a thread is to ask for suggestions, then maybe you shouldn't make threads.

I got the suggestion I need. I had forgotten about the helpdesk, so while the other comments were forgettable, at least that one was useful.

But I'm glad that you are okay with people suggesting that people who create threads might be "lying". I guess if people post that they think you might be lying, it might not bother you in the least. Right?

Hope some of you never find a WSO of your duplicated and ever have to ask for advice or make a complaint......
