Google Brands & Stores

Hi all,

I couldn't find anything in a search and know the Google Stores & Brands displayed under the search results have been around for a bit. However I was wondering if Google provides these stores (assuming they are purchasing Adwords) with better positions in the rankings? What i'm trying to figure out is if I put effort into building an efficient backlinking strategy if I could potentially beat any of these stores or if it was a lost cause. Has anyone had any luck?

For example if you search for "baseball bats", it lists 5 stores directly beneath the search. The first four stores occupy the Top-4 spots where the 5th store occupies #6. I have no interest in this niche but could someone rank higher than these pages if they put in a "better" effort than their competitors?

Thanks all!

Google began recommending brands for select queries. The queries tend to be generic shopping queries. Now, Google seems to have added “stores” and “types” to the brand recommendations.

Yes I understand that but I was wondering if it is possible to outrank the sites that Google displays in their Stores & Brands. In other words, does Google give them preferential treatment?
