Wordpress installed. Now what?

I THINK I've got my domain hosted and Wordpress installed, but it's all so confusing I don't know for sure. Anyone know how I can check? When I enter my domain name in the address bar, I end up at Go-Daddy, but that's supposed to happen until I get the site set up, right?

Anyway, assuming I've done everything more or less correctly so far, what do I do now that I've theoretically got Wordpress installed? How do I use that to build my website? Where's the "Wordpress Site Building for Dummies" thread? I downloaded a theme. Is a theme the same as a template? Should I download a template? Would that make this easier? Again, I thought this was supposed to be relatively easy, but every article I find is full of jargon and makes assumptions about what I already know how to do. HELP!

Thanks, guys.

This has happened to me before - I installed wordpress, but default host page still showed up. Exit your browser and clear your cookies. If this doesn't fix it then just wait a few hours. I've driven myself nuts in the past over this just to find it working fine the next morning

How can I clear my cookies if I've exited my browser? don't I need to be on the browser to clear the cookies?

When the site is new you have to wait for the domain name to resolve.

Just upload the theme and then inside wordpress click on Appearance then Themes. Find your uploaded them and click on the Activate button.

Templates are the files used to tell browsers how to display your wordpress site. Each individual template has names like: index.php and page.php

Themes are collections of templates and images that given your wordpress site its distinctive look. If you had a theme that you liked but wanted to tweak it and make a slight change then you would open up the appropriate template and change the code.

You most likely have found a theme you like and downloaded that.

    Hey Wurmwood,

I can talk you through this if you like.

Is your hosting with GoDaddy or just the domain?

Yes, please. I got the domain at Go-Daddy, but the hosting is from BlueHost. Again, I THINK I've got the two of them connected now and I THINK I've got Wordpress installed, but I'm not sure. How can I tell?

If you have them installed and connected correctly you should see a page that looks like the default Wordpress template with a page title that says "Hello World" when you type in your domain name.
I use Host Gator hosting and install Wordpress with Fantastico so I am assuming Bluehost is similar.
If it still goes to the Godaddy page after you wait a few hours like suggested, I would guess you don't have the DNS right.

Okay, so how do I fix the DNS. I already contacted Go-Daddy and asked them to change the nameservers and they wrote back and said they did.

          @Joshua
I'm pretty sure it's been more than 48 hours since they transferred the domain servers, but I'll check. Thanks.

Go to my account...domian management... it takes a couple clicks to get to the domain manager... Check the box next to the domain you want to change the DNS on... when you do that a whole bunch on options will show above the domains... click on name servers... click on set name servers... change name server 1 and name server 2 to the name server of your blue host account... click ok at the bottom of the window.

            That should do it

Oh... I should have mentioned... I went to my godaddy account and went through the above. So it should be right I hope I am clear enough. I could show you better on video.

You were right; my nameservers were still directed at Go-Daddy. I've changed them now. How long before I can proceed? 48 hours?

I usualy see the change within a couple minutes on Hostgator. But I would wait the 48 hours before I took the time to contact tech support.

I can't find my Wordpress Admin Panel and don't tell me to go to http://yoursite.com/wp-login.php. I've done that. I've also gone to mysite/wp-admin. Both take me back to Go-Daddy. What do I do?

        Question for you....
        How long have you waited?

If you have waited long enough and it still does not show up... can you write out each step you did to this point? Maybe one of us can see what is wrong.
I find all my admin pages by using "mysite/wp-admin" So I am guessing you missed something on the DNS.
I set them up often but I am still puzzled on what your problem is. Sorry

You should hit up the big G and do a search for 'how to install wordpress' or 'how to set up a wordpress site' etc...

    You'll get thousands of results.

You could even do it at Yahoo and watch it on video.

Hey I hope you guys continue this in this post because I'm in the exact same position as wurm atm . Bought my domain @ godaddy and hosting @ hostgator, changed the nameserver and downloaded wordpress, not sure what to do either. Though I read it might take a couple hours to a dat or 2max to get the domain to do the right thing

If you just recently bought your domain
and transferred your DNS servers it does
take about 48 hours for this to take effect.

how long did you wait after changing the dns? the 48 hours start there I think.

Have a small Q myself in between, If I changed the dns and installed wordpress via fantastico (using hostgator) and then wait 48 hours it should show a regular wp page with hello world on it?

Yes, you are right on how it should happen... From my experience though, it only takes a few minutes most times for the DNS to change. I have installed it all and got the basic site up without content in a couple hours and I am not a teche by any means. i might have trouble the next time though.. who knows.

*gasp!* It worked! I entered my domain name and it took me to a wordpress page! Got my theme uploaded and everything! Woo-hoo!

Okay, I think I'm alright for now, but I'll come back and whine if I have any more problems. Thank you everyone for helping me get this far, especially AEC for identifying the problem. (^_^)

Great to see it worked for you! I've done all the things I should do about 47hours ago. So I'm guessing if it doesn't resolve to my hosting account in the next few hours (I have checked over and over to see if the nameserver is right and it definately is exactly what it should be) Then I should contact costumer support?

I'm still not sure wether it is normal for a DNS to take 48 hours to resolve or not. Some say it only takes that long when you've just purchased your domain and hosting (wich is the case here).

Anyway I'll just wait some hours, maybe even untill tomorrow and then contact costumer support I guess?

Would love anyone to give me some advice!
