How to take control of someone else's site?

I just landed a new client today where I have to go into her site and install google analatycs and also an optin form. Later on I will also do other updates on the site etc.

How do I get access to her site to do the updates. Her site is controlled by her web designer but she wants to move it to me. Do I just need her cpanel login details for her hosting account? And if so How can I edit her site, what software to use etc. I have xsitepro2 but dont think its compatible with most sites.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Cheers

Ya the cpanel login and there ftp login would be what you need.

On a side hope you dont take afense but what are you doing trying to take one clients to update sites if you don't know how to do edit there site with out xsitepro ????

but great job landing the client money does love speed and it seems you hit the floor running.

No offense taken, I get the job then learn how to do the work and if I can't do it myself I outsource it right here in the WF and still make a profit.

I know how to do the work, run an email list, do link tracking etc. I just don't have any experience in getting access to another persons site. For example if I get the site in front of me in a wyswig editor I can do everything. My guess is that it's probably very simple to do but I just need someone to tell me how.

So if I get the cpanel login details and the ftp username and password is there a way for me to do the updates right from their cpanel or do I need to load the files into a wyswig editor somewhere and then do the updates and then reload the files to the hosting account?
      Cheers

The ftp info is all you need. And I have to agree with Henry...if you had to ask and only know how to work through xSitePro...(I removed the remark...just leave it at that)

    Good Luck To Ya...

Exactly what I was thinking. Any good free editors around?

Also to just install google analatycs and an optin form I can just email the html code to the web designer and have him update the sitre but I have a feeling further down the line she might want me to do on site SEO etc and then I will need access.

    Hey Dan,

Henry who I dont know what your talking about shhhh ^_^

    Jan,

Ya you can add google analytic and the opt-in box via the source in your files that you are editing.

opensource editors arn't worth the time just from personally experience I would really invest into DreamWeaver it is by far the best editor out on the market by far

Thanks for the help. I will just have her web designer add the code to her web page as far as getting dreamweaver, probably not right now. I reaslly like xsitepro2 just wish it worked with regular sites that's not built with xsitepro.

        jan roos,

Most cpanels, if not all, have the option to use the built-in HTML editor. Just click on the file. Say "index.html" for example--then look to column at right--you will have choices like "show file", "delete file", "edit file, etc. One of those choices is "HTML editor". Just click on that and edit to your heart's content. (this is great for small changes).

The only problem using that editor is that you do not actually have a copy for your own files. You might can copy and paste the file--I have never tried that yet. You could also just "download a copy" included in that list after editing.

I usuallly just open in "KOMPOSER" --a free "html editor/website builder", make changes and reload to site. This is my favorite option.

Now you know how to edit without using Xsitepro2!
Hope that helps you out a little,

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a bunch.

Just to be sure, with google analatycs I can monitor which pages are being viewed by the visitor right? As far as how many people click on the links in her website I use trackthatad url tracker which works great.

          Cheers

Glenn is right. My CPanel has the editing capability with the built-in HTML editor. If you're just making small changes, like adding the code for an opt-in form, you don't even need an HTML editor as such. You can make the changes in Notepad. So when you visit a site and look at the source code, it opens in Notepad. Save it to your computer and edit where necessary.

It helps if you know at least basic HTML for this. Of course, you'll save the file as html or htm.

I just logged into my hostgator c-panel and found the html editor for my sites homepage. I played around with it and it's actually very easy to make changes.

Dude, you have some serious sack on you, I'll give you that...

The fact that you are willing to go mucking about in someone's server without a shred of experience attests to that, but what else it attests to I'll leave blank

Good luck, and when you break something in her system, I hope you're a quick study or you can convince someone to fix it quickly within your budget, whatever that is, or you are going to have one pissed off customer on your hands!

This is probably the most *extreme* example of "Fake It "Til You Make It" I've seen in a looooong time, LOL.

I'm shocked that you would consider playing around with someone else's site like this. Its one thing to coach someone on components you feel they need such as an optin box and analytics. Its another to set it up for them if you are not well versed in the different website contructs.
Do you know how her site is built? Is it basic html? Has it been created with Wordpress, Joomla, or the multitudes of other platforms?

If her site is "controled by her web designer" then she probably doesn't know how to work on her own site which means she has to put her trust in you.
You have a responsibility as a "web professional" to represent yourself appropriately.

It sounds like you have a lot of learning to do yourself before you start working on client web sites. Maybe you should pratice on your own stuff before mucking around with a clients site.

It appears to me that you have a client who trusts you to know things you obviously don't know.

I've dealt with too many clients whose sites were screwed up by well meaning but ignorant "web professionals" - please do the responsible thing. If you don't know how to do it yourself, hire it done.

    Practice on your own stuff.

Obviously I won't go and screw with someones site if I dont know what I'm doing. As I said before I have experience mainly working on a blogging platform. All I wanted to know is how to add code to someones site from their hosting account and I got my answer. I have built sites before and am comfortable doing what I said I'll do. Also if I feel I cannot do it myself I will not just screw around on the site. I will get someone to help me or I'll just send the web master the code to install on the site.

As far as running the email list and doing some url tracking etc that I can do with ease and thats all I was hired to do.

I never claimed to the client that I am a web master. I am a marketer and can help her with her tracking issues which btw her web master doesnt know how to do. I'll also help her build a list and an AR series. Thats it. No screwing around blindly on her site like an idot.

      Cheers

Ok, I can definitely applaud this...you seem to be aware of the risks, but I didn't get that from your OP. Sorry if I dissed you, Jan.

Just be careful, and know your limitations- there are a LOT of things that can go wrong when you first start playing around directly in a server environment, and like Debbie says, a customer's box is no place to experiment.

With that caveat in place, I agree with BigMike: Go Get 'Em, dude! Let us know how you get on, and if you need any help...

    You can do it!

Create a test folder and upload there first and was suggested, back everything up or at least download and save the original files in a backup folder and probably best to go ahead and copy them to a disc also.

It's very hard to mess up beyond repair it you take those precautions.

    Good luck
