    just zip the whole website folder. your themes and files will automatically come under everything. Yes you need the files and the database.

    How would I make a database file that would be universal though? Like wouldn't it be to my host?

    You will have to change the settings in the wp-config.php file of wordpress (you can find it in the main directory of your website) and thats it. Database will be universal. Just import it from your phpmyadmin and export on your new host. Then change the databse settings like username and password in wp-config.php and you are good to go.

      as already mentioned you just need to compress your wordpress installation folder and php database backup .

      buyers of your site will heve to update his database/username/password in wp-config.php

        The posts above will help you to send a zip file to the new owner but this might be helpful if the new owner isn't technically minded.

        You could offer to have the site transferred to him/her for a small fee and save them any installation problems. This might be a good selling point.

        If you need any help with this PM me.

    /** The name of the database for WordPress */
    /** MySQL database username */
    /** MySQL database password */
    /** MySQL hostname */

    You can find the exact phrases I listed above in the wp-config.php.

    The WPTwin Wordpress plugin works great for this. It totally backs up your Wordpress blog... themes, posts, comments, settings, etc... everything.

    Just went through all the posts ( before Istvan Horvath ) and none of them know how to move a Wordpress site to another hosting !

    You have to change a lot of stuff

    1) The database setting in the wp-config.php file.
    2) The URL in the database ( SQL file), do a search and replace of the old URL with the new URL ( ask your buyer what their URL would be )
    3) MOST IMPORTANT: Change the path of the hosting in the database..again you have to do a search replace for this too.

      The WPTwin Wordpress plugin backs everything up into one file for you. It's fast and simple. If you are using the same domain name for the new Wordpress blog, you do have to go into your hosting account and change the nameservers to point to the new hosting account. But as far as moving the blog, this plugin does everything you need.

      I know this because over the past three days, I have moved about 50 Wordpress blogs using it. I didn't have to do anything but use the plugin and change my nameservers (because I was using the same domains, just moving the blogs to a new host).

      You CAN do it the manual way, or you can do it the fast and easy way and use the plugin. For me, with so many blogs, I preferred the fast and easy way for each blog, rather than having to manually do everything.

    As an alternative to doing a total copy, here's an alternative solution:

    1) Export the site. Done via Tools -> Export. Tell it to export images when asked. This will give you a wordpress backup file of the database.

    2) Export the THEME. Go into /wp-content/themes/ and zip the folder of the specific theme.

    All your customer has to do is:

    1) Install a new wordpress on their hosting account (2 seconds via Fantastico)

    2) Install the theme (another 2-3 seconds via Themes -> Add -> Upload)

    3) Import the wordpress backup (another 2-3 seconds via Tools -> Import)

    4) Set the permanlinks structure.

    Done.

    Total time: About 30 seconds if you know what you're doing and you dont' have to copy the entire site and dump the database and modify config files and manually create the database on the new server.

    Guys,

    don't make it a "war" between methods. It doesn't make sense.

    If your business is selling WP blogs - then learn the f*** basics: how to save/backup; push domains, install in the new location etc. Offer a full service and your business will grow.

    If you have to move tens and tens of blogs - a plugin could be helpful and the investment worth it.

    If you have to move one single blog occasionally - do it manually or pay a few buck to be done.

    These are ALL valid methods and everybody should chose based on their need and their specific situation. Therefore posts outlining in details any of the methods are always welcome.

    Posts made by ignorant __________________ with half-baked info and misinformation... should be kicked in the a** accordingly
