Building a Wordpress paid membership site

Fellow Warriors,
I want to setup a wordpress based paid membership website. What plugin is best for this. I see a lot of options but i don't know which is good or bad. I would prefer a free plugin but paid is ok.

Thanks

The one I use is Wishlist Member. It is $97 but well worth the price. You have to go through all the documentation to set it up (about 2-3 hours) but once you do it is a piece of cake.

I have not used any of the free ones so I cannot comment on that.

    Good luck!

Yeah, WishList Member does support ClickBank. MemberWing, Digital Access Pass, s2Member, Your Members, and Magic Members all support ClickBank, too. This page has all the details about each membership plugin's supported payment processors. Good luck with your membership site!

I use DAP. It's an amazing piece of work and the support is stellar. It also comes with an affiliate module built in so that all members can become affiliates of the product/service, has excellent "drip" features and its cake to set up. As you can tell, I kinda like it.

    • Amember worked very well for me, lots of features and very robust overall. Didn't try the other ones mentioned in this thread so I can't compare but I only heard good things about amember and have been very happy with it personally.

If you want to accept basic payment from PayPal and do simple file and content protection then s2member is the way to go. s2member is limited to 4 groups but most likely you will not need more than 2 groups.

I bought the micro-membership plugin quite a year or so ago, and it seems to be okay. I *think* I bought it through Marlon Saunders for under $10.00 as a special limited time offer.

I used to be a big fan of Amember and installed it on a few dozen sites. But I would never use it again. Lots of more advanced tools available now that are cheaper and far easier to install. S2member is the best value for money... bullet-proof and free. Wishlist is great too if you have the money.

DAP may be good... but prices start at $167 at the moment and range up to nearly $1000 for unlimited installs. It better be really good for that price.

From what I've seen, with DAP you're not only buying a membership plugin, but also a membership site setup service. Every DAP purchase comes with a free script setup by the company. They also offer other similar services like the "DAP Launch Concierge."

Not sure where you hot nearly $1000 for unlimited installs from? I paid $297 for my unlimited licence.

You get what you pay for really to a large extent. I think DAP is the best of the ones that I looked at and tried. I tended to spend a lot of time analyzing stuff before buying and a friend I really respect suggested DAP saying it was the best he had evaluated. I figured rather than spending a week evaluating stuff I was better off just leaping in. It is pretty good and support is good too,

Early days for me, but I am very impressed so far. I like the integration with VBulletin.

Worth noting though that you need to extend your licence if you want to continue getting support and upgrades after I think your first year, although they are continually updating it so depending on the cost which I didnt research it seems fair enough to me.

      Don,

I think you're mistaken about DigitalAccessPass (DAP) pricing.

If you see our sales page, there are only two main software licenses in DAP...

$167 for the 1-site license, and $297 for the Unlimited-site license.

The $497 and $997 packages are what we call the "Membership Site In A Box" which comes with a "Concierge" Service, where we work with you one-on-one for 3-5 hours, hold your hand basically, and set it all up for you - on a private call with just you and us. With these, you're paying for our time and expertise, not just for the software. Of course, the $997 package has many extra bonuses - like free commercial themes, vBulletin setup, Self-Service Store plugin, etc (at the time of writing this). You don't have to get either of these if you just want the DAP software.

Of course, there's the developer's license too with additional licenses for those who wish to "package" DAP into their services, but that's again relevant only to developers.

      Hope that helps clarify things.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions or concerns.

      Cheers!

Thanks for the steer on S2member. I was going to go with Wishlist but S2member is free, and people here seem to rate it.

One question? My membership site will be just part of my offering, so I am building a standard site and was thinking of hosting the membership side of things on a subdomain of my url with a link to it from my main site - has anybody else done this and does it make sense?

wishlist or s2 member.... these are both great for what you want to do.

But I guess you ought to do some of your own investigations first, just to make sure you are happy.

OK, let me ask you all this. I already have a Clickbank product of my own, but I am thinking about taking it a different direction, payment wise and having a member site. I am using OptimizePress for my theme, and I want to set it up so that you can go to my main page and buy my product for $0.99 which includes 7 days access to the member site.

The member site would be www.xxxxx.com/members or something like that. If you don't cancel your membership, after the 7 days, you'd be billed a one time charge of $69 for unlimited access to the member site.

Which of these programs would work best for this?

All membership plugins can manage this model. You just need a plugin that's compatible with ClickBank. But the minimum trial fee that you can charge with ClickBank is $4.95. You can't go lower than that. If you wanna charge lower or even $0, you'll have to find a different payment processor -- you might even need a merchant account.

Ok thank you! I do have a paypal merchant account so I could look at going that route and using e-junkie.

I could swear that I know of a product competing with mine that has a $1.00 initial fee and then a one time pay of $99, and it uses clickbank. And I DID just verify it!! If you want to see it, go to www.appdevsecrets.com and click their pay button. I wanted to make sure that it's a Clickbank product, and it is!! They have it set up somehow to be a $1.00 initial fee, then a $99.00 one time payment. How did they do that???

Yeah, I just checked. Turns out it's possible. You just have to contact ClickBank and see if they'll make an exception for you. Their decision will be based on your track record with them.

I would start with S2Member as it is free. Set it up, see if you like it. If you don't then go to a paid one. I use S2Member currently with paid clients and I find it great.

I bought wishlist but I am switching over to Jason's wp memberchamp since I can set up a membership site in just a few minutes using it. But it doesnt offer different levels of memberships which is fine for me.

I wrote an updated post on one of my blogs where I brielfy went over some options that can save you alot of cash and time setting up your membership site: How to Start Your Own Membership Site | maketheworldyourstage.com

One of the programs give you a free copy of the wishlist plugin for unlimited sites ($297 value).

    Folks,

The bad data about DAP's pricing keeps coming back (urghh!).

DAP is $167 for 1-site, and $297 for Unlimited installs.

Here's my post earlier in this thread that clarifies this...

I've heard good things about wishlist too, but I don't do membership sites with wordpress. I use amember and vbulletin, but it really depends on the type of site you're looking to build. I'm going to check out s2member as it's the first I've heard of that one.
