How Do You Find What People Are Buying?

How do you find out what a specific group of people are buying?

SPECIFICALLY:

let me rephrase - let's say you have a group of teachers and you want to know what they are buying - how would you find that out?

Thanks,
Debbie

You can go to websites those people would go to and see what types of ads show up or what products are being advertised.

What are the problem these people have that brings them together?

You can see ebay pulse to see top 10 items people are buying. Similarly you can use amazon and google (most searched terms) to get the idea.

I was going to say in the Clickbank marketplace you can click a category and then sort by highest gravity first, that will give you the best selling products.

One surefire way to find out what a specific group of people are buying, are interested in buying, or not interested in buying would be to hang around in these targeted forums.

For instance, one of the niches i first plunged into was those tattoo design membership sites. If you take a look around tattoo forums, you'd realize that almost nobody talks about joining these tattoo membership sites in the forum because they rather get custom/unique ones, or they could search the internet for designs rather than pay for them.

That said, i'm still making money from my tattoo website today, but the amount of traffic required to make a few sales is ... so much more as compared to my other niches.

With reference to your specific example, i can immediately tell you that teachers buy red pens. =)

    Off to register redpens.com ...

Without any research, i could immediately tell you that teachers buy red pens though. =)
I think that's a great tactic. Or, you can outright ask on the target forums your market research questions.

You can also try contacting the group offline. E.g., send a survey to schools, teaching organizations, etc. I would try a couple tactics and triangulate on the response, in case 1 channel may hold a bias for whatever reason.

Debbie - here's a way to get an idea of what different groups might be buying or what they might like . . .

Go to Amazon.com then go to the Gifts and Wish Lists section (link is above the search box). On the left under Browse Gifts you can expand any of the categories (e.g., By Relationship or By Personality). Simply click on a sub-category to see what Amazon thinks that particular group of people would like. Gotta figure Amazon has a pretty good idea of their demographics.

        Peace

Thanks so much dfs dean - yeah amazon is a great indication! They are the ones spending the big bucks tapping into people's buying habits. Great idea!

Specifically? I would ask them what their problems and interests were. People buy things for two reasons.

    1) They are trying to solve a problem.
    2) They are interested in the product/service and its features.

So I would find out what problems and interests are and go from there.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.
