Making progress but still no sales

Morning all (well it is in the UK),

I've been in this game since Nov 2010 and despite being a software developer by trade, I found it's a steep learning curve. Still, for the 1st time in my life I've found something I want to do with a passion so I shall persist.

I feel I am making progress and the mist is beginning to clear a little.

What I've learnt:
  • 1st, keywords are everything: Do your research and target your page and backlinks for that keyword.
  • 2 nd to keywords are backlinks: Whether it be a few high quality backlinks are low quality on mass - your choice.
  • 3rd there is no 3rd until you've mastered 1 & 2

After 3 months of attempting to absorb everything there is to know about IM I've began to realise that keywords & backlinks are the only 2 things I should be concentrating on to get the things started.

My main site, Dumbbell Set Guide - Dumbbell workouts & exercises, is ranking about #7 for 'dumbbell set' which gets 1,300 exact searches a month and I'm upto about 30 visits per day and rising.

Recently, I've put in action the things I've learnt over the last few months:
  • Revamped with a nice Woo theme.
  • Rewrote some of the articles (some outsourced) to have them better target their main keyword (SEOPresser is superb for helping this).
  • Purchased backlinking packages (Katrina).

If anybody can kindly offer any constructive advice on what they think could be done to improve this site I'd be most grateful.

I'm shifting my efforts slightly to make more use of outsourcing for articles and backlinking. I buy high quality articles for my main sites and cheaper ones for satellite sites (Hubpages, Squidoo etc).

Despite all the hype, it's becoming clear to me that success in IM is no different to success in any other business, it's takes hard work and persistence. Just like all other walks of life, you get nothing for nothing - don't believe that IM is any different.

Well I'm not seeing much success yet but I am working hard and I'm certainly persistent so hopefully success isn't to far round the corner. I am hoping to update this post in a few months with tales of some tangible success - watch this space.

I wanted to make this post now to empathise with others new to the game and not seeing any results. You're not alone, stick at it.

Although it doesn't say its a Woo theme. At 7th position when I use scroogle shows an amazon link. And most of the domains ranking for that keyword are ones like amazon, wal mart and other product sites.

Which site is yours? Maybe I can locate it for you in the top 100.

    *EDIT*

Actually I just checked how far back your posts date (which is NOVEMBER) and they date back to november the earliest. Site doesnt seem too bad. And I'm not blasted with Ads so that's great too.

Colour of greyish is great too because it represents IRON. Weird that you havn't had a single sale though. How's your opt-in doing?

And one thing I would recommend is throughout your posts maybe you should add a few call-to-actions in the colour red.

Not in all your posts but some.

Maybe a post sympathizing with the user could work too. Maybe a personal story? Or just a piece of text that hits the triggers.

How's your bounce rate? Do you have Google Analytics on your website?

And btw each time I do a unique search, the website is fluctuating back and forth from 5th to 8th.

Never heard of scroogle before, I always just use Google with the cached cleared.

    Hi Mr Dack

Nice site - very nice and well targeted in my opinion. I wish I could have produced something like that when I started 4 years ago.

From now on it is really a matter of "keep on, keep on, keeping on" More content, more backlinks. My main blog now has about 700 unique visitors a day but this has taken a lot of work. Once you get this number then making money from it is easy.

I would vary the backlinking and include youtube videos and blog commenting.

Join the main forums in your market and get a rep for helping out and giving out good info. After 30 -50 posts you can use your sig to point back to your website.

    Good Luck

    Kenj

Sounds like you've already got the fundamentals right so now it's just about continuing to put the effort in and build that traffic.

Sounds like you've got a few sites and it's a good idea IMO to target 3-4 different niches at first and see what works out best for you.

  • Just checked again, could have a few more backlinks for the time you've had this site. Currently your site shows 19 in yahoo, so I'm guessing you can't have many more than that.

Also have you checked what keywords are bringing people to the site?

Yes, Google Analytics proving it's weight in gold for this.

    Nice looking site!

You might want to make your product links a bit more obvious or bolder.

Also Amazon can be good but they only have a short cookie length so you might want to take a look in a couple of networks where you'll probably get better commission and much longer cookie length.

      Thanks for the feedback fellas.

      Bounce rate is about 50-65%
Optin is poor with 1 (2 unsubscribed) but I only added the optin about a month ago.
Keywords bring the visitors are dumbbell set and dumbbell exercises so should be targetted.

Maybe I'll look at making the call to action in the posts a little stronger as suggested - cheers.

Thanks again for the feedback chaps, much appreciated.

  • hmm traffic is definitely targeted. The keyword Dumbbell set seems like a user who is looking as it says in the keyword, a Dumbbell Set. You clearly state above in one of your categories that you have Dumbbell Set Reviews. Someone looking for dumbbell exercises could be looking for specific dumbbell workouts. Specifically the lifts and/or routines that work towards a goal, be it weight loss, weight gain, hypertrophy or building specific muscles. Maybe creating more posts a long those lines may help.

Definitely need to make some posts partially explaining a routine in small detail, then a call to action saying if he/she would like to learn more to 'click here' and further learn (not in those words, thats just me explaining it. maybe a little more persuasive and use of play on words.)

For 30 visitors a day, it seems an awfully low number at only 1 subscriber and 2 un-subscribed. Maybe the Opt-in form isn't visible enough for someone, though I doubt that is the problem. Possibly due to the people coming to your site looking for dumbbell specific things, the fact you are offering a general weight lifting guide may not be persuasive enough.

Maybe you should provide a guide more specific to dumbbells. Also it might be a good idea to mention tips or newsletter in that phrase in order for people to know that they will be receiving more than just that guide in the future.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3434351].message }}
  • Another thing you may want to do. You are doing reviews of certain Dumbbell sets (currently only have one). You should have at the very least a review of 5 different dumbbells. Just so it doesn't seem biased towards one type of dumbbell.

Also a post on 'Choosing the right dumbbells from the get-go' or something to do with explaining and helping others choose the right set of dumbbells would be good. Possibly even in your e-mail newsletter? From that either match up the reviews in the actual post or refer them to the review section.

Try all those methods, some of this has to work in that niche.

I like the overall layout of your site, and it has a very attractive header, graphics, as well as positioning of the ads (unobtrusive, yet still noticeable).

As Jason has mentioned, the opt-in rate appears to be a little troubling - after a month, with a steady stream of about 30 visitors per day, you should be getting far more than just 1 subscriber (even at a 2% opt-in rate, you should have had about 18 opt-ins). Perhaps you should change the freebie from a generic weightlifting guide to something more specific and attractive, i.e. "10 work out tips to increase your muscle gain by 30% over the next 30 days" (I just made that up - but I think you get the gist of what I'm saying).

      Hi MrDack,

You wrote as someone that will be coming up with GREAT results sooner than later.

One thing is clear, you are starting out quite well and the realization that you must persist is a very good one.

I want to quickly add that you should set a marketing budget and try to stick with it.

If you start doing it now, it will help you in future when you must have grown because just as in offline businesses, you shouldn't be spending without getting results.

At the earlier stage (incubation stage), it can be allowed but that need to change sooner than later.

      Keep to it buddy!

        Thanks for the encouragment Devid.

Budget is non existnet right now as I'm still at the stage of refining my processes but yes, agreed, need to sort this but I can even contemplate upscaling.

I really like you site, and I think the articles are good. Do you know how many visitors are reading your specific articles? Like the dumbell exercise at home article. That one drew me in. Something I personally would have liked to see is maybe a quick PDF tutorial of a simple, effective weekly routine that you were giving away, mentioned directly in the article? I notice the one on the right, but maybe start with a free guide and up-sell products later in the relationship?

Just a thought, again nice looking site. Keep up the good work!

          Your site looks great.

I create these types of sites and they make a lot of money—so you're on the right track.

If you're getting 30 visits per day you should be getting far more subscribers.

What you're offering in exchange for their name and e-mail is very weak and you need to replace it immediately.

I'd also recommend asking for their e-mail only, forget the name.

I don't know much about this particular niche, but you need to offer something far stronger to get visitors to opt-in to your list.

Think about creating a PDF which contains information which they just HAVE to know.

Imagine being a visitor, run through the process mentally and emotionally...

I would definitely write your own freebie. I'm trying to think what kind of freebie would be attractive to me if I was searching 'dumbbell set' in Google... maybe a detailed buying guide on dumbbells... or something like 'the top 7 bicep-bulging dumbbell exercises' (everyone wants big arms)...

I just looked at your site and as a active weightlifter (tried to make the All-Army powerlifting team in my youth) I love the look and tone of the website.

When I condcuted my searches with Google I did not see your site on the first page but that's not what concerns me.

You mention you are using satellite sites (hubpages/squidoo) to help promote your site. Any other methods or ways being utilized to send traffic to your site?

I noticed your avatar for this forum....is that really your picture? If so it looks like you lift weights so you also have a strong credability factor going for you because you look the part.

Use your knowledge to create some articles and start submitting them to a few of the main article directories.

Yes, I know that article marketing is taboo at the moment but high quality articles will still do what they are designed to do and that is increase exposure and drive traffic to your website.

Next, take it one step further and look for some weightlifting/body building blogs that allow guest blogging opportunities and offer to write an article for them.

If the content is exclusive to their blog you can obtain a backlink to your website and increase your own following (readers/viewers). You should be branding yourself as the go-to-guy when it comes to dumbells, workouts that can be used with dumbells and heallth benefits from using dumbells as part of your exercise routine.

Regarding your opt-in call to action "Get Your Free Weight Lifting Guide". I would improve that headline because what makes your guide different from any other weightlifting guide?

Also, maybe you could narrow your target audience into various segments such as dumbell workouts for MMA atheletes, dumbell workoust for guys that get sand kicked in their face at the beach...etc

Hope that helps get your creativity flowing just a bit.

    Respectfully,
    Tim
