Isn't it time you google proofed your business?

Over the past 4 years I've had over 1 millions views from articles myself and my wife have published. From that we have around 300,000 clickthroughs to our sites.

Sounds impressive doesn't it... the thing is that I've made one huge mistake,Part of my business is still at the mercy of Google.

The problem is I didn't collect 1 of those visitors email addresses.

My business is split into 2 "departments" The 6 year old blog/websites department and the year old product creation department.

Because the blog aspect is at the mercy of google and it's fickle alorythm changes the income from that portion fluctuates. so the income grows, shrinks, grows and shrinks.

On the other hand the product creation side where I ensure that I gather the email addresses of customers and potential customers continues to grow, more customers = more affiliates more affiliates = more customers etc. It's a cycle that leads to increasing profits.

So how do you google proof your business? Ensure that you are collecting email addresses, the more you can collect the more google proof you are. If google de-indexed all your sites tomorrow you could still earn money?

Collecting email addresses isn't just about selling it's about building a relationship and positioning yourself as an authority in your niche. We all get hundreds of emails selling us stuff. People assume that this is the way you should email market. It's not.

Some of my most profitable emails have been where I link to a video or report packed full of information and then just have a link at the end of it or a link under the video. You don't need a hard sell people can see value , they just need a call to action. "If you enjoyed this video You'll love xxxxx click here"

Start to Google proof your business now.

Doesn't stop there. spread out your traffic strategies sir. And be open to some unorthodox yet legal and ethical ways of building a list. There are tons of opportunities on here but the greatest stuff here involves potential partnerships.

Side Joke only thing Google has proofed to me is that they can CHANGE like life for no reason

I've been creaming about this for some times now. If I have my way, I'll spank everyone that complains about google cos google's a business and I'm a business man and don't want to be dependent on anybody!

The more people know this, the better for them. Let's be real business men and not 'illiterates that sell non-sense to illiterates' enjoy your day.

That IS impressive. Great post. Too bad you were not collecting emails but I am sure you still had great results from that hard work.

I guess the key is to USE Google but not be USED by them. Pay attention to Google but do not pay homage to them.

I had great results from the traffic so can't complain , but I wish i'd have bitten the bullet and set up lists earlier. I could be dominating those niches rather than just being part of them.

we all learn from our mistakes if we didnt we wouldnt be in this business in the first place. Atleast your learned from your mistake for I actually just started building my list for one niche and is doing rather well. However for that site I am now building my list for google actually gave it a bump up in the rankings for both the posts on my blog and the same articles published at eza. Over all since they changed the way they index pages my traffic has doubled almost every single day from the day before. So you can say I am rather happy with what they have done. But I choose to build a list for that site just in case those stats are to stop.

Mark, now that Google is targeting article directories as "content farms" how do you think this will affect your business?

For the blog side of the business, not as much as it would have affected it 2 years ago, Generally I have good organic rankings as i only ever use original articles on my sites.

For the product side not very much at all, (if at all) a few affiliates might be affected if they use product reviews, But that will be short term. I'll probably create a free course about building email lists and directing traffic to squeeze pages. so in a few months it should be win/win

Awesome thread man! Great points, most notably the one you made when you said that people somehow think this is the way to market, and it's not.

It make take some time for people to de-thicken their skulls. I also align particularly with what you said about list building. Not just about sales, but MORE about solid connections and demonstrating the fact that you are an expert, in some way, and offer solid actionable content.

    Nice thread my friend.
