I turn mine off for site wide using settings>discussion>Turn off comments on new posts or they can be set on a post by post basis

Good idea turning comments off. On the one had you want to reach out to your readers but on the other hand people go nuts in comments. Something is psychologically tweaked in people when they get into this digital medium for discussion.

Not to mention the spammers. I have so many comments that are most obviously spam, and poorly written spam. It's quite annoying.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I know you used to be able to turn it off that way but not in the latest version. That's the first thing I tried. I can't even turn it off manually as that option isn't appearing when I post or try to edit the post.

      Thanks

No that's not it either. Have you updated to the latest version (a few days ago)?

I can disable the comments on blogs that I haven't updated yet, but it doesn't seem to work on this latest version. In fact I could disable the comments on an older version, but when I updated it I no longer had that option.

      Thanks

what version of wp are you using? but I found that on every version, you can turn on and off comments sitewide on settings->discussion, or on individual posts / pages

I just hit the update button on Wordpress. It seems like the the newest version is unable to disable the comments or maybe installing it with Fantastico has something to do with it. Did you guys install it manually? I'm using hostgator's Fantastico so other people might run into the same problem.

        Thanks

            Are you using 3.1?

I just did a new install (on a new domain) and didn't even activate any plugins. The "about" default post was there and I could turn off the comments, but when I updated WP it was gone.

            Thanks

Can I recommend that instead of turning off your comments altogether you should change your settings to "approve" comments.

This way you can have comments on your posts because this does help build "you" and your name in what you are trying to do.

Yes I normally leave them on, but require approval. But I cannot turn off the comments on my pages as well - contact, privacy policy, sitemap, etc.

      Thanks
