Don't need to join paypal to pay by paypal - confused...

The other day, I click on a buy now button -- then I bought through paypal, using a new credit card -- and did not need to join paypal (set up an account) -- I just hit the "continue" link.

But today, I needed to SEND money to someone -- so I did what I THOUGHT was the same procedure -- but at the last minute, they tell you that you have indeed set up a (new) paypal account.

So, what am I to conclude? Sometimes you DO have to join paypal (open an account w/ them), if you want to pay for something -- and sometimes you don't?

Can anyone clear up this confusion for me?

Here's why I want to clear this up...

a) I did NOT really want to set up a new paypal account + feel they kinda tricked me into it at the last second of the "send money" process.

and

b) I need to be able to CONFIDENTLY tell people that they can pay via paypal, WITHOUT signing up with paypal!!!

Please adivse!

Thanks!!

The new type of check out pages let's you pay through your CC/DC, this is regarding the payment. But, if you want to send money for a service or something like that then you will have to register to paypal and verify your account.

PayPal really is the best, however it's a pain in the butt to get all the documents sorted out.
I have been messing around with it for weeks, and just got verified recently, so I'm good to go, and let the dough flow, for sho'

Timothy, it sounds like you may be a little confused. If you're selling something online and have set up a Paypal pay/checkout button, then your customers certainly have the option of paying with their credit card without having to sign up for a Paypal account.

On the other hand, if you're just wanting to send money to someone via Paypal and you're not actually buying something from them via a Paypal button, then you'd need to have a Paypal account to send money to them.

When you sent money to this person, did they have a Paypal checkout button? If they didn't, then there's no way you'd be able to send money to them without setting up a Paypal account first.

My partner has an offline business but uses this facility to enable credit / debit card payments to her Paypal account. It's like a merchant facility for processing card payments.

As Paul says, to send a payment you'd need to have a paypal account.
