Keyword research is critical to good SEO. Each webpage should have a single keyword or keyword phrase (also referred to as “a keyword”). All pages should also have a small group of secondary keywords. If any potential keywords do not get used as the “main keyword”, think about
using them as secondary keywords for the webpage or website.
  • Include the main keyword in your domain name. Try to get a .com name and keeping the domain name short is a great idea.
  • Make smart use of “meta tags” (sometimes known as “Page Properties” or “header info”). This generally means including the page’s main keyword within the title, mentioning this same keyword and related words in the description, as well as in the keywords section of the meta information.
  • General rules for approximate character length in optimized meta tags:
Title: max. 70 characters.
Description: max.160 characters.
Keywords: together total approx. 70 characters.
  • Within the body of the page, include at least 300 words of text relating to your main keyword. Include your secondary keywords in your content.
  • Within this content, Keyword Density is key. Include the exact keyword as 2%-5% of the page’s text volume. Any more or less can be an SEO penalty. Try to include your secondary keywords using the same density.
  • If possible & if it makes sense, use one or two links on the page as anchor text. This means make one of the keywords a live link to another related page within the domain or to another similar website that may be helpful to the viewer.
  • If using images, include a description (in it’s meta tag), which contains the main or secondary keywords. This description is also known as the image’s alt tag.
  • if your site has several pages, make sure they are all linked well to each other. Larger sites should have a link index or sitemap. This makes it easy for viewers and search engines to locate & navigate (“spider”).
  • Get incoming links! Reciprocal linking is generally not helpful, and at worst, harmful. Acquire “backlinks” from pages that somehow relate to the topic of your webpage. It’s even better if the pages that link to you have a high Google Page Rank (“Google PR”)
  • Use unique, original content. Do not use duplicate content. Copying & pasting another’s text is sure to land you in “The Google Sandbox” (bad).
  • Update and/or add content regularly. This helps pages get higher in the search engines. This is one reason why search engines favor blogs so highly. Think about adding a blog to your site.
Hope this helps
