A lot of people are considering quiting their job to become full time IMers. However, I'd like to discuss the benefits of a job which should be considered before you quit.

1. Steady, dependable income (is your income just as steady?).
2. Health insurance (consider the cost of paying for other forms of insurance).
3. 40 Hours per week (how much time do you spend on IM? What's the $$/hour?).
4. What are the expenses of the job vs IM (think travel expenses, autoresponder costs, etc).
5. Do you have less sleep and less time due to working both a job and IM? What would you do with the free time? Would you just double your IM time or take more time for yourself and family?

Consider what's in a job before you leave it and weight the benefits of having a job vs having a job + IM vs just IM.

Everything should be considered, from free time to health insurance to $$/hour.

Well, for me the biggest advantage of being a full time IMer is the flexibilty that no other business or job can bring. (Where else can one login in the morning to finish work in her nighties?)

For me, I went into business for myself quite unexpectedly. Without notice, I became the single parent to my children, including having a daughter who has autism. I did not have the money, or time, to go back to university. Instead, I worked to build a business and take care of my children. Being a good role model, and providing for them, is important beyond measure. I also need the flexibility of having my own company so I may be available for my children, plus provide autism therapy for my daughter. The process has been difficult, but I have learned a lot and I sincerely appreciate all that I have been able to accomplish.
