Internet Marketing Newbie

Hi Folks,

As the title says, I'm a complete newbie and this is my first post on this site. The site looks amazing and really useful but my brain is in meltdown at the sheer amount of information here.

I'm looking to set up some squeeze pages/websites to promote some private label resell products that I've come across on what appears to be an excellent site. I'm also considering adding affiliate links for Clickbank products on these sites. Not sure if this is a good way to go but it is what I like the look of.

My question is the million dollar question though. What is the best way to get traffic to the sites? Is it the traditional methods such as articles, SEO, blogs, PPC, ads etc or is there really a piece of software available that, with a few clicks of the mouse, can generate vast amounts of targeted traffic to your sites, as the multitude of ads around at the moment seem to be claiming?

I realise that I've now left myself open to be bombarded with hundreds of ads and links etc all claiming to be 'the one' but I'm hoping that some of the members on here will be able to give me some genuine advice. My gut instinct says that these products aren't likely to be effective but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong!

Kind Regards
Paul B.

If you don't mind paid traffic then jump straight in with Google AdWords - go through all of the tutorials provided on the Adwords website, find yourself one of those free start up vouchers for new customers and keep a keen eye on everything whilst your campaign is running!

I wish I'd got involved with AdWords years ago!

  • Well as a fellow newbie who has now gained some traction.. I advise you NOT to look at the site too much.

All you need is this TalkBiz News: What you really need to know to succeed online - Online business building newsletter

This is a book by Paul Myers and it tells you all you really need to know. Start there.

My advice is to keep focused.

In depth: Don't allow yourself to get overwhelmed by all the information around on how to do this and how to do that online. The way you do that is to not hang out too much on forums like these, because there are simply too much good information here that if implemented correctly will pay off.

You got to be persistent and make the system you choose to go for work, and stick to 1-2 things at the same time. This is VERY important when you're starting out online, because it's just SO easy to quit because of information overload.

Finding different ways to drive traffic is something everyone is struggling with in this business. That said, there's a lot of great products on that subject all over the internet, and if you're short on money there's some really good reports on how to drive traffic for free as well.

You just got to look around a little, but to help you get started, one name comes to mind : Kim Roach.

She's the traffic expert online and if I were you, I would definitely subscribe to her list.

        Hi Paul,

Welcome to the very exciting IM world. It is good that you are aware of the many ads that will flood your way.

You don't have to take everything that gets to you if you want to succeed in IM.

The truth is that there is absolutely no software that generates traffic (whitehat).

But who told you the SEO articles no longer works?

It depends on what methods you are applying and the competitiveness of the keywords you are targeting.

You can choose to target the less popular keywords in the niche you are operating.

It is much better that way and will surely bring you the traffic you need.

Just get going and learn along the line but stop searching for any 'traffic software' because there is NONE!

There is no such thing as an overnight success!
As I listen to the stories of the successful internet marketers that I admire, I am struck by the similarity in their stories. There is always a big reason why they have pursued the internet marketing dream. Also, they had to experience a lot of failure before they achieved success. For most of them, the road to success was neither short nor easy and there were many obstacles that needed to be manoeuvred past along the way. Most of the successful internet marketers spent at least a couple of years honing their craft.
I have found, this week, that when I became discouraged about my lack of progress both on this blog and on other projects that I have been working on, it is good to stop and listen to the experience of others.

good post Mark, I think that when you want everything now, you cut corners and do not set up your business properly, and this will lead to failure down the road

  • Hi Paul. Assuming you already chose a niche and have good keyword
research data, I suggest asking yourself these questions:

Which groups in your target audience are expected to regularly look online
for niche-related solutions to their needs and problems?
Which of those sub groups are expected to purchase those solutions online?

What are they expecting to get from their SE searches?
What actions are they expected to do once they get what they
    need from their SE searches?

Which other online places do they go to get content which can
supplement what they learned from their SE searches?
Where do they go online to discuss relevant things with niche experts
    and others with similar needs?

Who do they consider niche experts and people with similar needs and
    problems?
What content about those solutions do they consider useful, supplemental and beneficial?
What would they consider as the best solutions to their niche-related
    needs and problems?

I'm confident you'll know the best ways to drive traffic to
your website, among other beneficial things, after you analyze your answers to
    the questions above...

Focus on one method/strategy and keep plugging at it... but be flexible... change strategy when things don't work

Just a quick line to say thanks to everyone who replied. This is all really helpful stuff and I'll make sure I pay no attention to the 'traffic software' ads.

You can go the traditional paid traffic route like PPC, or go the free way like SEO, which might take a while before you see results.

Or you can go with 'alternative' traffic methods like forum marketing. This is smart because you are going to places where traffic already exists. So simply put the link to your site in your forum profile signature, and you get good targeted traffic that way.

If your product is something that is complementary to that of someone else who already has a list, you can do a joint venture with them where they mail their list to you, but give them 100% commission. In return, you get to build a list!

Or put up the first few chapters of your product on say scribd, and then at the end of the pdf, link to your site if they want the full scoop...

So think of smart ways to generate traffic to your site, it doesn't always have to be about competing for google ranking.

Follow your gut instincts Paul while staying open and optimistic to new ideas. Test everything out (in small portions). And then figure out what works best for you. This way, you minimize the amount of money, time and resources you lose while finding a system that finally works for you. All the best!
