It could be that digg got considered as the authority site, and yours was considered duplicate content.

Keep checking back. Google does that occasionally with site (not just Digg) and then in a few days they are back. Check in a few days and see what your ranking is.

I'm guessing your Digg submission didn't get very many votes? Fewer than 50?

From the viewpoint of the google algorithm, there weren't many internal links on the Digg site supporting the outgoing link to your site -- there weren't that many votes for it. So it gave a very weak link to your site. Digg, on the other hand, is a huge authority site so the google algorithm decided that your site must be duplicate content or not as important as the Digg.

First, don't get too worried about it. Digg submissions do well in the rankings, but their results are short lived. The Digg SERP will go down and your original article will go up as the algorithm figures out the direction of the link. And if someone is looking for what you've got, they're very likely to click on through to your site if they go to the Digg article.

Second, support your site with some other links from other social media sites. This will help google figure out that there are actually several places pointing to the real authority -- your site.

And finally, build up some relationships on Digg so that when you submit something you can get enough votes to pass some real link value.

Think of those other social media site results in the SERP as placeholders that block your competitors. If 5 of the top 10 results are social media results all pointing to your article, you're crowding out the competition.
