Staring a Paid Forum... IMPORTANT Question

I have been thinking of launching a paid membership site with an integrated forum for users... However, I really don't understand how it's done when you are just starting out.

I mean If someone did it and I was the first member to join - I would sure freak out seeing how I am the only member of the forum... How would you go around that?

Thank You,

Alex

Launch the forum to a list to you start with some momentum.

Hi Alex, if its really important to you and you want to "speed things up" you can easily pay people to boost your forum posts (such as forumbooster.net)

      Haven't heard of that, thanks!
No, I am not in hurry. I am planning to growing it into a 6 figure monthly membership site, so I really do not mind taking my time to do things right... build a list, test, test, test...

Thanks for the forumbooster.net - I will look into it,
      I appreciate your input

I must add though, that I have found their customer service to be a bit poor (I paid for 300 posts but then halfway through they sent me an email telling me the "boost" was completed... I have had to contact them a number of times to tell them to finish the job.. which they are now doing)

So there are companies that boost your forum, but be aware that things dont always go as smoothly as you might want them to be.

I have tried the various booster services- very dissapointed. You are better off offering some free limited time memberships, and also creating some alter egos to do some initial postings.
Once you have some, you can do a posting contest- the most posts, or whoever submits XX posts gets an ebook, or extension on their membership.

This could be a good idea, however it will make a few people to post useless replies, such as : "Nice", "I agree", "great post"... I think you know what I mean... However, the niche I am going into, I think I could offer the "free membership" to those who post the most interesting stories related to the problem... hmmm... another idea to note

        Thanks for replying.

Or you can do like I did and let them say - WTF!!

If you can over-compensate during this time, and give the new members special attention you'll do just fine -

For a private forum, I'm not sure that I'd want to buy fake posts because of quality issues, for a public start up I think it's a great thing -

but keep the quality high in the private membership forum by either offering free trials, or discounted memberships to charter members or let the first ones panic a little bit

I've still got the panicking members, but they are getting what they paid for, and seem to be cool with it... I'll let you know if anything changes.

Thank you for the reply, Matt.

The thing is I will be selling an e-book and I think I could be offering the $29/m forum membership FREE for the first month. This should get people posting...

My mate has run a successful paid forum for 10 years now. The way he started was to attract people to a free forum first, then he offered a free membership to the most active posters to a paid side of the forum. He also offered a number of competitions and discounts to the first members.

For membership sites with forums, you can seed the membership/forums with charter members. Charter members get a fat (and permanent) discount (like, 50% or more) to get in on the ground floor of something new. For that discount, they are guinea pigs and are expected to provide feedback to get things into shape for the launch.

And even before you have paying charter members, you can have some folks that you know personally help you seed some topics.

Your charter members will give you valuable information to help shape the content and the launch, all the while populating the forum with content so it's not a ghost town upon launch.

Havent read through the rest of the responses but if this has already been said then sorry.

But first off defiantly do not use any sort of bots to make posts i certainly would be more upset if all the post were by bots then if i was the first member.

But if you have a list offer a 1 month membership to your list or a certain group of people for 1 dollar for lets say a week if by the end of that week they have 25+ posts they can stay as a member till the end of the month for only a dollar. After that prices go back up to a dollar.

So you get paid you get 25 plus post per member you give this deal to as well possibly some testimonials.

    Just an idea

    Hey Alex,

Eric is right... don't go that route... bot posts/hired posts are so easy to spot a mile away.

    Always think quality first.

Your best bet in my opinion is to launch the forum to the public first somehow... there are many creative ways you can go about this... 'Join now for free before it's a paid membership' is always a sure fire way to get tons of people to join...

      Thank You, Jared.
I will write this down and think about it later

I did more research about paid forum posters, and as already mentioned above - they are great for FREE generic forums, just to get some traffic going, but for a PAID quality forum it's a big NO-NO.

      Thanks all,
