Mild Mannered Marketer Has A Rant....

Hi everyone,

I'm not normally one to have a "rant" at the forum but today I couldn't help it....This really P****es me off.

I bought a product over the weekend which included a number of plr and resale rights products...etc...

Now when I got taken to the download page I wasn't able to download about half of the products unless I subscribed to lists of about five different people.

Yes, I've seen this happen a few times before and it's probably great marketing for the people involved in the joint promotion...however, me as a buyer I REALLY don't like it...If I'm expected to join a number of people's lists to get what I've paid for I believe I should be told that on the sales page.

I'm interested to hear how some "buyers" feel about this process.

Have a nice day and thanks for listening....

Colleen :O)

    I agree completely!

I hate paying for something and then finding out that I have to jump through hoops after I already pay.

If they want you to opt-in to additional list why not make them bonuses that you can get if you decide to opt-in.

It's called Co-reg. and of course the buyers are gonna hate it and the sellers are gonna love it. Problem is it's gray hat at best...

It would seriously piss me off too. Once I pay, I expect to not have to jump through any more hoops to get my product. I realize that entering my name and email address isn't much of a hoop, but it's the principle of the thing.

I agree ,when you don't get what you thought, or "more rules" are added after you have already made the decision to sign up or buy, kind of makes me think what else will not be right with the product or service. What has happened to the good old fashioned honesty?
I usually tell myself that I just don't want that product anyway and move on.

        Hi Coleen:

        Yes pretty disgusting.

But they all have a short business life with me anyway as I would simply unsubscribe from them all and not buy any products from any of them in future.

If people stay on their lists - well they fooled you!

I guess that you have been taken for a ride. I wouldn't like to be in your position, imagine paying for a product and finding out that you have to carry out certain tasks before you are allowed to download - frankly a load of gyp! Did you get in touch with the webmaster and rant to him/her? Perhaps, they may be able to make an exception in your case.

I can see were this would tick people off and it would definitely get my blood boiling, but that being said, if they were upfront on the order page and said what was expected before the purchase then I probably wouldn't have a problem. Would be nice to be told this kind of thing before hand...

That to me is automatic refund time. If someone has to use hijacking tactics to sell, I don't think I need what they are selling and seriously doubt that the quality of the product will be what I'd hoped. People who sell quality don't need to deal like that. Better check that PLR stuff and make sure it's not
    plagiarized.

Did you not receive the product you paid for?

      Then what is the problem?

If it is just a opt-ins to get the bonuses, then don't opt-in for them.

If they implied that all the products were included in the purchase price, then that is deceptive.

        Coleen,

I feel your pain. Been there.

If it is a package with more than one contributor, then I would say
your issue is very common, and kinda necessary. However, I still
don't like it myself. There are lots of marketers that will tell you that
you shouldn't deliver anything without getting an opt-in; if there's no
opt-in there's no delivery. Common practice.

I'll tell ya what really boils my blood. When the rights offered on the sales
page differs from the rights delivered on the thank you page. This happens
with those packages that have multiple contributors. The director of the
event doesn't always check contributor's entries quite closely enough.
I've seen it recently with one big name marketer (senior warrior).

There are many things that are common practice for the marketer that
aren't exactly consumer-friendly. But, since marketers sell to other marketers,
we tend to just put up with it. Maybe we shouldn't.

This may give everyone something to think about, especially with the global
economy on the skids. There will be a lot more newbies than usual coming
online, and the marketers that can find unique ways to get away from the
old school techniques will reap the bounty.

        Just my thoughts,
        Tommy Linsley.

P.S. I have to say, I'm enjoying your BlogInferno package so far.

I'm pretty sure she was referring to not being able to download anything at all without opting in.

Even if they were advertised bonuses I would still be a little irritated maybe, but if it was some sort of unadvertised type of deal, it wouldn't make a difference to me.

I don't think this is the right way to do it. They should have a "no, thanks" option instead of forcing buyers to join up. It's about managing customer expectations, and getting them to put in more than they'd expected is no good.

You're right. If you paid for the product, you should get the product without doing anything else.

It would be different if it were one of those "free" offers where you get something free in exchange for joining lists.

I do not ask for a refund often, but using this

I've had this happen recently too, it is really annoying and personally I think enough reason to ask for your money back. I don't mind having to opt in once, but that's it, you shouldn't have to opt in more than once to receive a product that you've paid for. Really, you shouldn't have to optin at all if you've paid for something.

Wow, Colleen. I've seen a lot of arm twisting opt-in schemes, but that one is disgusting. I don't blame you for being angry.

I have to wonder if that kind of method works, anyway. Personally, I have a junk email address for forced opt-ins. I just go there once a month or so to clean it out. It's such an obvious solution, lots of people must do it. So why twist arms and pi$$ people off. Doesn't make sense.

The worse example I've seen of this was a Firesale package of 100 products I purchased.

Much to my horror, I had to subscribe to a mailing list to receive most of the products. Yet nothing was mentioned about this on the sales page.

For a short time my mail box got out of control, so I had no choice but to unsubscribe to all these mailing lists.

Many are of the products in this Firesale are excellent. It's just the hassle of having to sign up to receive them that really cheesed me off.

I am not just saying this to go against the grain but; as long as you get the product how is that a problem? I was under the impression that a mailing list was something that you would want to go on... is that not right? Mailing lists are there to provide you with information.

Did you actually sign up to the mailing lists Colleen? Are they rubbish? Have you recieved all that you were told you would recieve?

If you dont like the mailing lists then unsubscribe to them.

It seems strange that you should have to sign up to more than one though. What type of mailing lists were these?

    Hi Colleen,

Love your work! Very important P.S. at the bottom of this post...

I completely agree. In fact I purchased a high-ticket item earlier this year that came with "$3000+" worth of bonuses - 12 or 14 in all I think - some of you may know the one I mean... only to discover that many bonuses required sign-up to separate email lists etc.

I picked up two that I was particularly interested in and let the rest slide right by. They made no difference to my decision to buy.

It's good to read rants like this one. It reminds us all to stop and take stock before using a certain tactic in our own marketing.

Always apply the "how would I feel about this?" - or more importantly - "how will this make my customer feel?" question. If you focus on delivering awesome service, (which includes not p*ssing your customers off), the money will take care of itself.

    Cheers

    Steve

You're perfectly right - in the past when faced with this scenario I just don't bother claiming the bonuses (many of them are old recycled junk anyhow)

Recently I was asked to participate in a firesale type deal by providing a product - I decided against it as I knew this is what it would involve for the buyers.

On a side note - that's one of the reasons I use DLGuard to deliver my products as it automatically adds the buyer to my autoresponder with the buyer having to complete other forms - they just click on the double optin when they get it - keeps it simple and secure....

Hmm Let me play devils avocate here

I'm wondering whether you are referring to John's Santa deal, if so, much of the stuff on there has been specially commisioned by the contributing marketers at their own expense. (I didn't join in because the ebook I had commisoned for it wasn't ready).. If its not new stuff, they are products which they are still selling on their own sites.

Basically these marketers are asking you to optin to their list to offset the cost of what they have spent or are losing in sales on the products they have contributed.

Is a forced optin right or wrong to get the product you paid for? well some people think it's fine.

Personally I don't like it either and its something I don't indulge in. I don't see the point in filling my mailing list with garbage emails.

I contibuted to Vince Tan's recent firesale and this is how I did it.

I had a really nice squeeze page made where I offered an upsell for my membership site at half price. (I made about a dozen sales). I also offered an excellent inducement for people to optin to my list for a further free gift. (Notice this was not an obligatory sign up and I got a couple of hundred subscribers out of it with more trickling in every day).

At the bottom of the page, they clicked on a link to get the product they had paid for and everyone was happy. (No forced sign up)

Could I have gotten a lot more sign ups if I'd made it a forced one, of course I would, but then I would have to have dealt with the hate mail coming my way.

Forced optin is one of those things you have to study and decide for yourself whether it's effective or not. (I've decided not). Personally speaking, I was very happy wth the results of the squeeze page I submitted on Vince's sale.

    Cheers
    Kim

I've bought into a few mega deals like this previously, and while it's not a tear-my-hair-out process, it does make me much more selective about the bonuses I want to download. And even then, I unsubscribe from almost all these marketers' lists afterwards unless they are providing value in their newsletter.

It would be nice to let any potential customers know that sign-up(s) is/are mandatory to claim the bonuses, though.
