Hey Guys, Can we huddle? Wee bit of assistance needed..

Hello guys. Let me cut to the chase -

I am a virgin when it comes to creating websites. I never created one myself. However, I am not naive nor stupid - I've done my homework when it pertains to creating a website, gaining organic traffic; and I am all about SEO. I've also trolled the Warriorforum for months on end.
I use to write for a few content sites, but Google recently deemed said type of sites as "content farms" and smacked these type of websites into the deepest bowels of the internet; subsequently losing traffic and revenue for the writers and webmasters alike.

My livelihood is dependent on SEO tactics, so I would like to think I am well versed with that facet of internet marketing. I would also like to think that I am a good writer and would really like to utilize my literary skills.

So I decided that now is the best time to start a website and monetize it with Google Adsense.

I am pulling stuff out of my ass and currently brainstorming like hell. Help me find some nuggets of gold from this brainstorm. Even assisting me in finding a piece of coal of suitable size and density that I can manufacture into a nugget of gold over time can really benefit me right about now.

So what I am thinking: The creation of a How-To website. But the tone of the website would be different than other how-to sites like eHow, etc; as this site would have a very "no bullsh*t" ambiance to it. Does that make sense? A how to site offering solutions for real world problems with real answers. The site may have a bit of satire for the LOLZ. All content will be created by yours truly. Atleast initially.

Another idea: Create a website where common terms are compared to other similar terms. For example: An article on "Finance vs. Economics" will explain the difference between the terms. These terms tend to be interchangeable, however, there is a difference. This "website" will expand on the difference between the terms.
I find myself using "vs" alot in my search terms, like "DSLR cameras vs SLR", or "Secured credit cards vs Unsecured credit cards". This website will answer these inquiries with an authority voice on an variety of topics.

Ultimately,no matter what route I choose, I want to create an informative, authoritative website that people can reference.

Anyway. What do you think? Do you think this too competitive? Should I specialize in a certain niche? Help me declutter my mind. bah.

Disclaimer: I am not asking for anyone to hold my hand. I am planning to do this by my lonesome. However, I just need someone to atleast point a finger in a general direction. Just a bit. Please.

If you read this far into my message, I thank you and I shall have your babies.

Thanks a bunch guys.

I think you need to stop thinking and start doing.

I think everyone who is starting out needs to give themselves the freedom to put up two or three absolute crap websites, because getting your hands dirty is the only way to learn.

I think you should choose a niche. Then later, you can choose another niche. Don't try to build websites around the topic of "everything you know." Create a site around "everything you know about peaches."

I think you're capable of building a following based around your sense of humor and writing skills.

I think you should put a website up today, just so you're not a virgin anymore. Go to Yola.com (free), sign up, create a site, and post something you've written. Build a few pages. If you're feeling ambitious, put up some pictures. Then social bookmark your new site. Voila, you're a webmaster. Welcome to the Internet. :-)

I think a lot of time people get too caught up in the idea of "competition."

"Oh, this site already does what I want to do, that guy already invented this product, yadda yadda.."

In the end, the more competition the better. That means you know people are already buying.

Take a look at the iphone. That phone was revolutionary when it just came out. Then the moment it came out, a million other companies made a bunch of knockoffs. A lot of those companies don't have as big of a slice of the pie as Apple, but they're still getting a very reasonable sized slice from a very lucrative industry.

Unless you're aiming to be the next Facebook, I say go for the smaller bits. Your sites sound like great ideas. Run with it. You'll never really know if it'll catch on until you actually do it.

I think that the how to site is a great idea but probably a bit too much to take on unless you focus on specific micro niches. People will always need answers to their problems and will always be willing to pay for them.

        Regards

I have to agree with Kim.

I think "how to" is a great idea. But you need to drill down and find out what people want to learn.

If the information offers a service with good information, you cannot lose.

I have a very simple "how to" video that I posted on Youtube that has gotten hundreds of thousands of views. And as a result, drives tons of traffic to my site....

If you create a "how to" website with a market, you'll have a winner....with lots of traffic.

    Create a LOT of websites.

The ones that don't make much AdSense money, dump. Sell them on Flippa.

The ones that DO make AdSense money, develop toward the authority site goal.

As they begin to take up more of your time and effort, dump the worst performers to make room for the best. Again, sell them on Flippa.

Eventually, you'll be left with just one or two high-quality authority sites.

This is a long-term plan, but it gets you a lot farther than sitting around trying to guess which one niche is going to be that authority site in the end.

These ideas are definitely helping me out.

I am at the cusp of this brainstorm bell curve...of sorts.
I like the fact that someone pointed out that I might gain a following due to my writing style. I already have a "following" on these content sites (Demand Studios, Suite101 etc). I'm kind of scandalous with a dark sense of humor and I am glad that it's transferring well with my writing, hah.

Less brainstorming. More doing. Got it. I may not create a site TODAY, but I shall definitely start creating one during this weekend.

Anymore ideas? Throw them at my face. Hard. Oh yeehhh.

    Thanks

One idea would be to do a how-to site in chunks - first a site on, say DIY DVD player techniques, with articles on how to clean a DVD read head, how to program a DVD, etc., then move on to another niche.

Eventually take your best performers and create a "Mega-How-To" blog, combining all the niches.

This way you can start out small, and only grow it as big as you can handle at any particular time. The longer you've been at this, the more you can handle.

    Hope that helps...

From the way you sounded, you may not start anything except if you choose to start NOW.

Just pick any of the ideas and begin from there.

You will do better by sticking with just one idea and work on it day and night.

The results you get will give you the necessary inner boost to expand your horizons and deepen your hold on any niche you choose.

      Good luck!

You lost me at My livelihood is dependent on SEO tactics considering your post opens with I am a virgin when it comes to creating websites. I never created one myself.

Make a website first, then we can talk about SEO tactics and if your livelihood is dependent on them. Currently, you aren't well versed in anything aside from theory and hypothetical nonsense. When you can rank keywords, two words or less on something people are actually searching for, then you are well versed in SEO.

After reading that post, all I came away with was I'm a newbie pretending that I know what I'm talking about but haven't really done anything and I'm not making any money. Sorry, I know, truth hurts.

I know, you want to hunt with the big dawgs, not sit on the porch with the pups.

So what I am thinking: The creation of a How-To website. Why are you asking? Just do it.

If you think those are good, viable and profitable ideas then take action.

If you asked me four years ago about lolcatz, I'd have told you it was a stupid idea. Clearly, my opinion isn't gold plated or bulletproof. Opinions are like.... you get my drift.

Pick something, stick with it and make it happen. Don't abandon the project in two months and don't waste your time trying to find the next big thing.

You'll always have more big ideas than you know what to do with and your latest big idea will always sound better than the last. Ignore them. A big idea is worthless unless you see it through to fruition.

Just remember, Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and... take action

So let it be written, so let it be done.

UM. Come again? The first half of your conversation was condescending, came out of nowhere, was full of assumptions, and was simply unnecessary. I don't know you, however, I am very familiar with the mental prowess of the Internet Troll.
Just letting you know that my heart goes out to you, but you won't fulfill your personal deficiencies here. Simply acknowledging your "contribution" is enough for you, right? mkay.
Good luck with your ailment. I shall pray for you.

alas, the second half of your conversation had some insight, with suggestions that I can actually use. So thanks for that tidbit.

Ok, now that I've hopefully calmed down the peanut gallery...

I want to thank everyone for the bunch of PM's and suggestions that I can actually utilize in my endeavors. Good luck everyone.
