pricing membership site

Anyone have experience of low cost membership learning sites targeting family users/hobbyists as opposed to biz/make money etc

For example would you charge $7.99 month or say ask for 6 months at $39 with the option to renew after 6 mths to get more cash up front. But then it makes it a harder sell at the start.

any good examples of a low cost membership site (learning site) scaling it big?

thanks

    If you're genuinely going to be updating the members area regularly and keeping people coming back for new info, then you can charge a lower price recurring over several months. Otherwise, get as much cash as you can upfront.

    But you should do some split testing and see what your member retention rates look like. Maybe offer two different payment plans at first, and see which one converts/retains better.

    @paul thanks

    I can think of SOME membership sites under $10 like all the gaming sites for kids that ask the parents to pay a few dollars a month like club penguin at $3.95 but then of course this has the might of disney behind it.
