Should affiliates even bother with press releases?

Press releases make for great backlinks, great promotion and can show up in the search engines quickly (I've heard).

The only think I can assure 100% and have seen for myself is with press releases you can grab great rankings! PRLog.com for example ranks really good and free-press-release doesn't do bad either. Not to mention the News results... If I get it right, 90% of sites that show up in news results are press releases. I have no doubt you could grab high rankings for competitive keywords fairly easy when submitting your press release to sites in News Results.

This sounds all great but for someone without a company of his own, no huge brand and reputation is it even effective to write a press release?

What about affiliates? Should they even bother with press releases?

I think it can be Beneficial if done properly, and for me properly on a
press release means 'news worthy'. This is more difficult on an affilliate program, but with some lateral thinking, and research it can be done.

My personal feeling though is make sure your press releasesmare news worthy and ad value.

Right Cathy, some press releases can indeed be news worthy

    Katya,

I have always returned the fee of people who tried to hire me to write press releases for them when they are only an affiliate of the company involved, for several reasons:

1)It's impossible to get authoritative quotes from them about the product/service.

2)The affiliate is unlikely to have a newsworthy angle on the product that relates specifically to the affiliate and not to the product/service/company.

3)If the press release did spark media interest, it would benefit the company and not the affiliate.

(I've written two well-regarded books about publicity so I'm not just your average press release writer.)

This is not to say it absolutely can't work, just that I don't feel the odds are going your way.

      Marcia,

Well I look at Press Releases in a whole different way... Let's see if I can answer some of these questions or statements.

1)It's impossible to get authoritative quotes from them about the product/service.

If you use the product or use testimonials to cover this angle. Third party first hand experience is some of the best because they have unbiased opinions of what they like and or dislike about the product they purchased and used. You can also look to other experts in that market to give authoritative quotes about techniques or other information the product specifically addresses or solves.

2)The affiliate is unlikely to have a newsworthy angle on the product that relates specifically to the affiliate and not to the product/service/company.

A true affiliate is promoting in a market he knows well so it's fairly easy to link a real newsworthy angle by looking in the headlines of news authority sites and see if there is a way to relate the product to what's currently happening in the news.

3)If the press release did spark media interest, it would benefit the company and not the affiliate.

I use press releases to direct attention to my own sites or parts their of and never the product owners.
(HINT: Create a video about the product and direct people from your press release to your video for more detailed information)

Press releases are just another marketing tactic to add to your arsenal. PRlog press releases rank real well too. I am not huge into them but I will write a few here and there and they will work as long as you can get on the first page of Google for a good keyword phrase. Just another free tool to use for some extra traffic.

Here is a good example of a press release pushing a CPA offer: Katherine Heigl Shows Off Her Electronic Cigarette On The Late Show With David Letterman

This link was shown here by another WF member a few months ago to demonstrate how powerfull press releases can be.

That's a good example of one of the differences between online press releases vs. traditional press releases.

Even when the 'news' element would never be picked up by a journalist, it might just be interesting enough for a blogger to feature it, if it's interesting to that audience.

And there are the additional benefits of backlinks and targeting keywords for SEO traffic.

KatyaSenina Hi! I must say it can be very effective for someone without a company of their own, no huge brand or reputation to invest in press releases. Especially with the way press releases are valued by Google and other media outlets, they can be a great source to add versatility to one's SEO campaigns. I firmly believe press releases are starting to carve its own SEO section. There is more and more talk about "optmized" press releases that focus on SEO results rather than the standard typical reasons to get a press release out there. I have had many clients who we have written press releases for for their affiliate programs and I have had many of them come back as repeat customers. Now, I don't know what other methods they use for their SEO, all I know is they are pleased with the results they get from our press releases which tells me press releases are effective to even the individual or small business.

In my (limited) experience as an article writer for directories, and of course as an affiliate I attempt to link directly to a products sales page, and to my blog as well(quick "5 by".)

      In general I'm finding there are two ways to write articles (at least for me, I'm certain there are far more ways, these two happen to serve the purpose at the moment);

      1) to write about your field in general
      2) to write specifically about the product (as in a review)

I read the release on the smoking device indicated a couple of posts up. In general it seemed very much written in the "3rd party", and very much as non advertisement. But in many ways it didn't seem any different than an articles who is writing about a given product, yet at the same time had elements of "writing about the field" in general, or product in general??

You see??? I come away with a sense that the lines are very much "merged" and very "murky" and really in many ways are not much different than your average article, albeit to be "a recent innovation" in your particular field...

my assessment(if I were to give one) is that if someone can write a "factually based article"(key word it seems in the case of a PR), you can write a PR....

If I'm wrong please tell me.....!

      thank you!

      Dano~

EDIT!! unbelievable! there was actually an exit "pop-up" my gosh!!! that really seems to be more of an advertisement than a press release if there is such a hard sell?

Press releases are my favorite way of generating awareness, visibility, back links, and and building your brand and reputation.

A company with no reputation should most certainly use press releases to get that! I generate a LOT of traffic with press releases. It is a very important part of SEO I do for clients.
