What is the best way to build a list from scratch?

I have been reading a lot about list building, and have tried a couple of methods myself. I also know that for long term success, list building is very important.

I have learned about a couple of tacticts for list building:

Most if not all of them requires that you create a squeeze page on your website/blog asking for contact info and driving traffic with PPC and/or SEO methods, forums or blogs (or any other traffic generation strategies).

One can motivate the visitor in various ways to enter his details, ie:
  1. Tell them they will get a free report/ebook/video
  2. Ask 1$ or something to get the report/ebook/video - this results in a more qualified prospect and less prospects than (no 1)
  3. Ask them to tell others about your website and then reward them with access to the report/ebook/video this may - this may generate more prospects, but how good are these prospects?
  4. JV with someone with a list

What method have you tried, and which works the best, and which should one avoid. Also I would like to know if there are any other methods (hopefully better ones) that I have not learned about yet.

I've used method #1 with moderate success. I've my free ebook/opt-in for about a month now. I display the form on my main page and multiple blogs.

With limited promotion of these pages I've built a small but significant list. It shows that increased traffic to these sites would definitely lead to people signing up. But, considering that these people are in it almost solely for the free product, I've yet to find out how useful the list will be. Only time will tell on that question.

Instead of a free report or an ebook you could give them something usable, i.e. something to fill in, a template etc.

No. 3 didn't work for me. If you're going to get any emails this way they'll be either fake or their own secondary emails.

Most of the time you won't get any... reason: people are lazy. And if your list is about making money on the Internet people might fear they'll get ridiculed by their 'real-life' friends (just my guess.)

    Don't forget about article marketing.

You could use a 1 shot autoresponder with a coupon code too.

You would need ongoing reasons to stay on the list though

Do alot more than just build a squeeze page... build a squeeze page yes, get targeted traffic to it. But there is so much more you can do.

    1) Sign up to targeted forums, make friends with the interested members and ask them in a PM if they want to be part of your list, they get discounts or freebies for being part of it, and they help you out.

    2) Use Social Networking, Web 2.0 type websites to make friends and do the same.

    3) Get your squeeze page top of Google. Do this by making a simple "FREEBIE GIVE AWAY" type Video on Youtube.

    4) Put the E-Mail Subscription script on every page of your site. Plus in your actual products.

I think offering free quality products through an autoresponder is okay.

Here's 1 tip I have just found by using google to answer your question, hope it helps:

    Run a competition
Everyone likes to be a winner. If your products and services are highly desirable, offer a regular giveaway. For larger promotions, offer something that everyone loves to win - like a holiday or a shopping spree. Whatever is in your budget.

    Good luck

Thanks for all your responses. They are good, and made me think about one or two things that I forgot about.

I haven't been successful with web 2.0 social bookmarking strategies yet. But maybe I need to learn more about how to do it there.

Number 1 certainly works well forme.I think a lot of people online are used to this method and thus offer least resistance.

You should simply make sure your freebie is something people really want. Get this right and your traffic will work well as most people will sign up to receive your freebie in exchange for their email address.

PPC I think is something of a specialty you must know what you are doing.

I write articles and offer a freebie in my resource box to get people to join my lists.

There are a lot of places to offer your freebie. This forum is one such place. Offer your freebie on the Make Money Online section. People sign up and you grow your list.

The more you post the more exposure you get. Very importantly you can build relationships here that will then help you where a joint venture opportunity presents itself. You could offer your unique frebie to another forum marketer and they do the same for you.

    Hope this helps.

make an opt in page providing a free e-book, or maybe 10-20 e-course lessons (you could even provide affiliate links in them if they could be usefull to ur customer). Then as soon as you have done that promote the site and get alot of visitors

You know what worked awesome for me, even as a newbie?

I marketed myself via youtube on videos, so my likability factor made people want to opt in just to be able to stay in the know of what I am up to.

I deliver instant content and information they can use and relate to. And I have been told by some of those on my list(s) that it's the content and who I am that made them opt in and stay on my list even if what I was offering in terms of a business was not for them.

I get very few opt outs and my list is very eager to hear from me.

So no matter what I have marketed, I have built a list pretty effortlessly via the content I offer in my videos.

It's totally free and it's a blast to do videos!!!

The best way to build a list from scratch is to center all of your marketing around your - offer, offer, offer

Everything else is secondary to your offer...

Do you have an example of your first video (or any other video that you have made will also do)?

There is absolutely NO list building technique in the world that will work if you don't solve the problem of getting traffic first.

Think about it... if you had the traffic you could build a list of 100,000 optins quite quickly, trouble is getting the traffic.

And not just any traffic, you need targeted traffic...

Look at this problem as a traffic problem because right now you don't know which list building method will work for your market because you haven't tested anything with enough traffic.

The key to #1-4 is to tap into a very strong desire and offer a solution that will help get your prospect from where they are today closer to their ultimate objective.

    You MUST have...
    • Identified the end outcome your prospect desires
    • Give them a reason WHY your solution will help them get there
    • Offer Proof that it works
    • Supply them with tremendous value in exchange for their opt-in
    • Keep them engaged with a multi-part solution, follow-up help, etc...

It's NOT just a matter of offering any ebook, video or report - it is offering THE ebook, video or report they absolutely CANNOT resist because they want the end result you offer them so badly.

It doesn't matter what technique you use to get traffic to your site, if your incentive is not well targeted or doesn't provide proof, chances are your conversion rate will be extremely low.

I'd say focus on articles to drive traffic and offer something of value for free to create incentive. I don't know about submitting to 100 places. I only submit to 5 directories and it still gives me decent results.
