I am doing research on several domain names I am considering purchasing. I desire an aged domain and one that fits my keywords and several are available.

Is there a good tool that will tell you the domain age and any issues it may have?

What do the experts suggest relative to researching before buying.

Thanks!

A whois will tell you how old the domain is, when it was registered, when it was last updated, etc. http://whois.domaintools.com

Then you need to check what the domain has been used for previously by going to Internet Archive: Wayback Machine .

Yes. the Whois is a good research tool. Also the WayBack machine. But how are you finding the names to purchase?

There are also some good agents that will find you an old expiring domain that already has Page Rank. I've used one called NameJet in the past but there are others.

    I agree...Whois.net.

Then look at the date registered.

It shouldn't be difficult to find aged domain names.
    Interesting niche!

    Got me thinking. lol!
    Hope that helps.

I agree, there are probably hundreds of warriors who have domain names they are not using and you could pick up something you could use for a song...

I have about a hundred listed at Domain Names For Sale The Discount Virtual Real Estate Store

Two true! My new years resolution was to actually get rid of a ton... amazing how much money you can save when you drop the domains you actually have no intention of using

Thanks for all the replies.... great help.

One domain I am looking to purchase (found by keyword search on buydomains.com) a whois search shows the registrant and a link for godaddy. I check the godaddy registrant info and it says the domain was registered in 4/07.

But... the wayback machine actually has archive pages dating back to 2/06. How can that be? Tough to tell how old the domain really is.

It means the domains was registered before 07 but it expired.

Here are some good tips for Choosing a Domain -
    How to Choose a Domain - Part 1 - How to Choose a Domain - Part 1

    How to Choose a Domain - Part 2 - How to Choose a Domain - Part 2

As far as determining age and history you can try the wayback machine at archive.org and the "cache" in google listings.

      Lots of good info.

One thing I am struggling with is determining exact phrase keyword search numbers.

The numbers I get from google and from Market Samurai are totally different. For example, for the keywords "Dive Shop Review" , in quotes just like that in google search, I get about 16,000 total searches. My understanding is that is the monthly global number for that exact match keyword phrase.

For the exact same exact match keyword search.... Market Samurai shows total monthly (not daily) searches is 390.

Now, 16,000 sounds like there may be a market. 390 is a clear waste of time. More importantly, the research either way is worthless as I have no idea which numbers are more accurate.

You need to use Google's Keyword Tool

I've checked and it's the same as Market Samurai:
