They opt in after 6 pages, but don't open the emails?

Greetings fellow warriors!

I have a somewhat *strange* problem

I have a site for the dating niche:

masteronlinedating.com

It's a pre-sell funnel of 6 pages for an optin

Thing is,
people go through all the pages. Sign up.

But no one (only 6%) opens the emails.

WTF??

Anyone have an idea why?

This is strange as hell ...

Thanks in advance!
- Adam

Your actual open rates will be higher than the 6% figure
quoted because some people don't allow the open tracking
images to be activated in their e-mail client.

    However...

If your open rates are low, here's a few things to look at:

    1. Subject Line

Are you using subject lines that make people want to open
your e-mails and see what's inside?

    2. Reputation

Have you established your reputation and authority so that
people actually want to listen to what you have to say and
    read your e-mails?

    3. Relevance of Content and Offers

Make sure that you deliver relevant content and offers inside
so that people are not disappointed when they do open your
    e-mails.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

I'm finding alot of marketers experiencing similar results or generally getting less than 10% clickthrus. I'm beginning to believe it is a result of one being subscribed to too many sites etc or getting too many emails in their inbox making their attention span even shorter to messages recieved.

I also agree with Shaun above these results could be due to those 3 points he made.

From myself, I'd say that by far the most important is reputation.. If you have established a reputation of a person worth listening to, they will open your emails even if they have tacky subject lines. Getting such reputation is a tricky thing to do, I know, but very important.

Yeah. I offer a free report at the end. The weird thing is that they do OPT-IN.
Just don't open the emails. Even the first one.

    Isn't it strange?

I mean, why would they opt in if they don't want the report?

    Bah. I'm freakin cluless here!

    @shaun

    Thanks for checkin in bro.

Yeah I took that into account.
But 6% is freakin low even with it!

The subject lines (in my opinion) are enticing.

    That's debatable.

    But.

The fact is. I give them 6 pages of pure content.

    Then I say:

    Ok. You want more?

Put your email in this form. Get the rest of the story + the free report.

After they opt in I send them instructions on how to open
the email, how it looks like.

All that with a photoshop thingie with arrows and stuff.

    Thanks for the help guys!

    Still wondering...

    Anymore ideas anyone?

Let's get to the bottom of this!@

How do you know that they aren't opening the emails?

Tracking devices to determine open rates don't work very often (as Mike stated earlier) with current/popular email configurations.

If you use a download link for the report you are giving away in the email instead of attaching it to the email, that would be easier to track and you could confirm your theory.

Aweber has good tracking. Its your subject lines and credibility with the people. You haven't really helped them is how they feel. Plus the combination of inboxes having literally thousands of notes. Building the list is great but it needs to be a bigger and bigger list or you really are going to have to over deliver on really helping the people to keep them engaged.

    I use aweber. Always has.

    I don't want a big-no-relationship-mega-list like the "gurus" have.

I want a tight crowd. People who know, like, and trust me.

    Maybe I'll switch to a low-barrier entry.

Like a 7$ manifesto or something to enter.

I'll test this for another week or so before I'll switch.

Will update here with the results.

Even the largest email marketing firms on Earth, who provide millions of emails daily across the entire spectrum of niches and demographic targets barely achieve 10%.

In IM you have a lot of so-called "gurus" lecturing you on what your open rate "should" be. But in reality even with a perfectly crafted headline you'll be lucky to get over that figure reliably.

Also, the open-rate is notoriously difficult to actually track even with fantastic tech, Aweber and GetResponse certainly do their best but it's a losing game to focus too much on it.

Instead focus on your actual clicks, which really is the point of the entire campaign (and is more accurate in tracking). If it's a more crowded evergreen niche like IM, Dating/Seduction, Weight-Loss, etc, I try to maintain a CTR of 5%, which is 5% of the total emails sent versus clicked.

So if 20,000 emails went out that day, I expect to see around 1,000 clicks in total.

The open rate will vary, play with your headlines as others have suggested, but again it's the clicks that I prize as that data is extremely accurate.

If you're going to talk bollocks, then please do it elsewhere.

Here are some actual results on open rate research from
MailChimp where they measured open rates from various
industries with data from over 570 million e-mails.

      Research | MailChimp (no affil.)

All of them are consistently above 13% open rates. Some
      of them are above 30%.

Note that open rates are measured differently by each
autoresponder provider too. For example, Infusionsoft
open rates are for unique opens whereas AWeber quote
total opens in the main open rate (though you can get
the unique opens if you dig deep enough in their system).

You can increase your open rate figures further by
split-testing subject lines, content, offers, etc. Also
segment your lists to increase the relevance of your
      message to your list segments.

Exactly what I mentioned, agree 100%.

The bottom line is obsessing over open rates will only get you so far. You must look at it as a total strategy, in which you're evaluating multiple metrics towards the common goal: clicks.

At the end of the day all you can is test, and compare figures to your OWN to establish a control group.

In your case Adam you'll need to follow the advice myself and a few others have mentioned, monitor the results, and whittle down your subject lines to those that showed direct improvement.

It's easy and you've got the right attitude for sure. I have no doubt you'll report back in a month and your open rate will be far higher than 6%.

The way you have the site set up where they keep clicking from page to page, by the time they get to the last page a lot of these people are probably entering their email just because of the smaller commitments they have already made on previous pages - not because they actually want to opt in.

There are probably others who are expecting to enter their email and be taken straight to the next page with more free information on it. When they see they need to confirm they cannot be bothered.

I would test putting all the information on one page instead and see what sort of results you get. Also make it clearer around the optin box that the information they receive will be sent to their email address - thus eliminating a lot of the bogus email addresses that get entered.

I would also maybe give away less content before you ask for the optin. You may be giving people enough information before the optin that they don't feel the need to get the rest of your information.

    They don't need to confirm
    It's a single optin

And I ask them loud and clear to put their
    best email adress their.

I might split test what you're saying
about putting it all in one page

    Thing is,
I like this method of MAKING them
    read ALL the content.

Or at least Skim all of it.

    But again,
    testing is a good option.

    Will do that later on.

    Thanks bro!

@Adam Aweber forces the person to confirm even if you have the option checked out. I learned this through signing up and testing over periods of time. Do a test by signing up with one of your emails to see if this is true. If you have a way of getting the first message to show without that then I need your help on that.

To get a higher open rate the subject should arouse curiosity along with having an indication that it will be very rewarding and it can be strange or shocking sometimes. You just have to test and its good to do broadcasts to test that.

That is great that you have 100% open rates. I went to your website and wondered what type of conversion rates are you getting with like 5 or 6 steps to email. I have to show the headline, 2-4 bullets and opt in above the fold to get 25% up to 40% on mine.

Its definitely the subject headlines that play the biggest part in open rates for the emails. Credibility and likability next. Do some broadcast tests and arose that curiosity also throwing in some what's in it language to get the people to open. Test, test, test some more.

I went and tested your page. The people do have to confirm because I went to my yahoo mail and looked for your first email. Waited a couple minutes pressing refresh every 30 seconds and still at minute 7 no email with the free gift. Look at your spam feature and redo the follow up and test your email to make it immediate.

Also I see mixed methods with some marketers giving the gift on the thank you page so you avoid people getting disappointed waiting for it or having to switch websites. Also the people that give fake emails will still have the chance to click on affiliate links which is still potential money.

why should they open your emails. Do you mention yourself on the sales page? It could be that they signed up to the site but then start receiving emails from you and aren't sure who you are.

If I am tagged then so many others are. I still havent got your gift and its been almost 40 minutes.

I am a test on a different IP address and you wonder why there is a low open, its because they either #1 Don't know who you are to open email #2 Forget about the email because of delay time I am getting and it gets pushed down the list becoming invisible when it finally gets delivered. #3 Subject title not enticing enough

And the last suggestion is that you give the free gift on the thank you page which is what many marketers do with success. Your response was that I was probably tagged with Aweber, and then to suggest that people do not give you list building tips.

You've made me feel a bit better, I got a 36% open rate on my last email and thought that was bad.

Not sure if this helps: but I tend to use larger articles rather than 6 smaller pages. I usually talk about what I will send out in the emails as well, to build some curiosity.

I mean actually talk about the details of the content I will send, not just 'insider' content.

What do you send in the first email?

You could maybe add a bit more detail about that on your last page, then state that it will be sent to their inbox.

I guess you are best testing different things to see what fits.

      1. If you have the double optin feature disabled, the only time your visitors will be asked to confirm is if they signup with bogus email addresses or if they are trying to signup using the same i.p within a certain time period. The reason you would have been asked to confirm is either because of your email address or because you were trying to signup to the same web form using the same i.p. address within a short period of time.

Here is more information on this straight from Aweber...

Though you have Confirmed Opt-in turned "off" for anyone who
fills out the webform on your website, there are some instances
in which Confirmation will still be required. We have taken
many steps to ensure that addresses are not added fraudulently
      or maliciously to your list.

When a lead fills out your form there are a number of things
that are passed along "behind the scenes". One of these is called
a "referring URL", or the web address of the page where they
      filled out your webform.

If that subscribers browser does not pass along that URL, a
Confirmation message will be automatically sent out, to ensure
that it is a valid subscriber, and not a "web-bot", script, or
      other malicious subscription attempt.

If you click on a lead in your database that wasn't asked to
verify you will be able to find the referring URL where they
filled out the form. If that "add URL" field is blank, then it
was not passed on, and they were sent a Confirmation message.

Also there are some addresses that may always be
      required to confirm.

If an email address at a major domain is submitted to
your list, and the "user" part of the email address
(the part before the @ symbol) is four characters or
fewer, that subscriber will need to confirm.

For example, the following addresses will always need to confirm:

      * bob@aol.com
      * test@hotmail.com
      * jeff@yahoo.com
      * asdf@gmail.com

In most cases, extremely short user names in the most popular domains
are either mistypes, blatantly bogus, or dead email addresses. All of
those can negatively affect your deliverability. So, in order to prevent
them from being fraudulently or maliciously subscribed to your list,
      they will need to confirm.
      2. Regardless of whether or not you have single or double optin disabled, yahoo email addresses are renowned for having problems with aweber. A large majority of the email addresses on my lists that never receive the confirmation message are those with yahoo email addresses.

To try and help this problem I would steer away from using a free email address like hotmail or gmail as your aweber 'from' address. I would also remind people on the thankyou page to check their junk/bulk email folder for the first email if they have not received it within 5 minutes.

    Hey Adam,

6% is not a bad conversion rate at all. I know you want to
have 99% or 100% but that's not possible.

Anyway here's my tip.. In your thankyou page try to put a
video explaining clearly why the need the report right now
    and what to do.

This can increase your conversion rate a lot.

You have to test different approaches, don't think that the
thankyou page you actually have is the best you can do. It
can be great for you but not for your prospects...

So, go ahead and start testing different things.

    Thanks,
