Been doing lots of reading online and IM almost seems to have it's own language. I'm constantly looking up abbreviations and new-to-me terms.

One of the more common jargon terms I'm coming across is "Mind Map". Guess I'm getting old... I thought that it was called brain storming?

I'd like to learn more about mind mapping, what makes it so special, how to use it correctly. It sounds like it is a worthy technique. Anyone here use it, or know about it?

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea - WIKIPEDIA.

I use them each day, they help me keep things organised and help me focus on 1 thing at a time. You should try them too.

This is an example image that I fetched from google. I hope it helps

According to wikipedia, A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

Sounds just like brain storming to me as well the way they describe it. However, it appears that the approach is a bit different. Furthermore "Mind Map"seems to be a Trademark in the USA & UK.

To mind map (from what i've gathered so far), is to use you base keyword in the center of a piece of paper and then start to branch off it with connecting lines and label them different yet relative categories. You then start to get into deep sub-categories after a while until you can't think anymore.

The end result is a bunch of niche related ideas that can be blended, separated, re-arranged, built upon, etc..

Still seems like Brain storming to me... But apparently "Mind Mapping" originated in the U.K. & "Brain Storming" Originated in the U.S.A., so they may be divided simply by the region in which the names were born and became popular.

There are different approaches to drawing a mind map.

Tony Buzan claims to be the inventor and he sells a lot of books.

I tried to force myself to use a certain style of mind mapping and I have to tell you that this isn't a good idea.

Play around with mind maps and find your best way to use them. It is important that you are able to read your mind maps, after all!

I'd recommend XMind as a tool, since it's totally free. You don't need the Pro Version in my eyes.

Mindmaps can be daunting. Initially so in the creation, but also in the interpreting later on. Too much info can lead to viewers bailing on it.

Should have added, just use a "keyword" approach.

    Dog>Breed>German Shepherd

I have a friend who would instead do it...

Dog>Breed>Large>European>German...then child links to intelligence, eating habits, hip issues, how many sofas the dog will likely eat, etc., etc.

Keep it simple if you plan to show it to anybody else.
