Minirant: Who thought that preserving formating while copy/pasting was a good idea?

I mean seriously.

I find that all the time when an article writer sends me an article in a .doc or whatever format, when I copy/paste it into my WordPress it carries over the formating, which of course I don't need. I like my formating the way it is.

All the time, I have to use Notepad as an intermediary step, which is annoying.

Minirant over though,

perhaps someone knows what could be done about it?

    I googled "Plain text clipboard".

The first program returned seems to be the type of thing you are looking for (looked to be free). I can't vouch for the software never having used it, and therefore don't want to link it here either.

Thanks, but I'm very paranoid about using 3rd party software for my clipboard content However thats an interesting thought, will look around

If you paste your article into notepad (comes free with most computers find it in by hitting "start -> all programs -> accessories") it naturally removes all formatting, then simply press copy and paste out of the notepad into wordpress.

Thanks, and this is exactly what I'm doing right now (which I also mentioned in the original post).

I'm ranting and looking for a better solution (a bit, mainly ranting though )

You could ask the writer to send it in another format, perhaps?

But I totally agree. The .doc format is not a universal format and it's not even compatible with all text editors.

Exactly. When you tell your writer what you want them to do, ask for the files to be delivered as a plain text file. Problem solved.

You could also past it straight from your word in the html editor of your wordpress, that'll strip all the formatting too. It's what I do.

It will do, yes. These things are often written in "Word" or whatever, which isn't designed to go online. The formatting, as you say, is a pain in the neck.

This is exactly what I've always done, for getting my own content onto on my own sites. I write in "Word" or "Works", then paste it into Notepad and out again before it goes online. Only takes a second but it does strip out all those nasty hidden codes you want to get rid of.

I think you can specify to the writer that you'd like unformatted delivery as a plain text file (i.e. so that they do that instead of you, really!).

Yes, Why not you use HTML VIEW in wordpress.. while you are on NEW post page.. you see TWO tabs.. one is VISUAL and other is HTML...
click on HTML and paste in here.. it will not copy any formating just text.. this will remove
    the notepad copy pasting step..

    Regards,

You've got some solutions in this thread already, however if I were you, I'd just ask for a plain text file from the writer.

I always take the time to deliver in .docx and .txt format for my customer's convenience. That takes me like 10 additional seconds!

    Matt:

Have you tried saving said documents as a txt file, then opening the txt file to copy and paste into WordPress?

Would be a ton easier than copying and pasting into notepad.

Even if someone is using the wysiwyg animal (aka Visual editor) of WordPress... they could at least get familiar with the tool they are posting with

It would have taken probably less time to check what that little button with a yellow folder and a big T on it would do if you click on it.

I know, I know: it is very unpopular telling people to look around in their own admin panel and click on ALL the buttons to learn what they are for.

Allow me to be less condescending to answer your question. As Istvan stated, while on the HTML tab click on the icon that has a T on top of a clipboard. It will allow you to paste in plain text.

Believe me, this will save you a lot of aggravation.

just ask the writer to provide txt format, he/she will probably be ok with it.
